Twitter started as a microblogging site, and as blogs are familiar things we can hopefully work out how good Twitter is at this.

So what is a blog and what does it do? Well there are many flavours of blog out there...
First there are the expert blogs: subject matter specialists sharing their insights about stuff they really know about. These blogs sea a kind of free punditry: people acting as if they had a newspaper column.

In the shadowy corners of the shortwave spectrum lurk the Numbers Stations: strange radio broadcasts of mysterious blocks of numbers in creepy monotone voices!

It's actually an old form of spycraft which is still in use today. And as it's #WorldRadioDay let's take a listen...
A Numbers Station is a type of one-way voice link for sending information to spies in foreign countries.

Operating on Short Wave radio bands they transmit a secret code of spoken numbers. Use of Numbers Stations peaked during the Cold War, but some are still operating today.
Numbers Stations are operated by various national intelligence agencies. At set times on a pre-arranged frequency a musical tone is played, followed by a speech synthesised voice reading out blocks of numbers. To most listeners it sounds both creepy and meaningless.

Today is Jayanti of Madame Bhikaji Cama, revolutionary leader, close associate of Veer Savarkar and a truly remarkable lady. Also designed one of the first versions of the Indian flag too. Noted for her fiercely independent stance on all issues.
If there was one common aspect of Madame Cama's life, it was her rebellious nature. Walked out of an unhappy marriage, opposed her husband over his pro British views, gave all the support to Savarkar defying the British Govt, refused to compromise on her stand.
Bhikaji Cama was born on September 24, 1861 into a well to do, Paris family in Mumbai. Her father Sorabji Patel, was one of the city’s leading merchants, also an educationist, philantrophist too.

USS UPDATE! Last week @UCU's Higher Education conference voted overwhelmingly to ramp up preparations for an industrial action ballot over #USS to begin in September. Why? And what's at stake? Read on... 1/
Firstly, why a ballot? When the Joint Expert Panel's report dropped in September, there was hope from all sides that it had the potential to end the dispute. Adopting its recommendations would mean a shift in philosophy from #USS and rate increases low enough to negotiate on. 2/
Both @UCU and @USSemployers backed the JEP report, the latter with the strikes still fresh in the mind and eager to put the dispute to bed. The issue, as was always likely to be the case, was with #USS itself. 3/

#Today's story to #EndFamilySeparation Four months ago, Dad and 4-month-old entered at the Texas/Mexico border and requested #asylum. Dad and child were immediately separated and the baby put in ORR custody. #FamiliesBelongTogether
Dad was detained in a #Texas detention center where @RAICESTEXAS consulted. Dad accepted a deportation to be quickly reunited w/ his infant child. However, the Dad was deported & NOT his child. The now 8-month-old baby has been in ORR custody for 4 months. #EndFamilySeparation
The Mom and Dad now have once weekly Skype calls with their 8-month-old baby. That's right, folks. They Skype with an infant. #EndFamilySeparation #FamiliesBelongTogether
