Some Muslims seem to deem it more important to have a 'relationship' with the noble and final messenger of God, than with God Himself.

From amongst the actions indicative of this:
1. Spending years studying the sirah but not the Quran.
2. Learning about the Prophet's characteristics, but not God's.
3. Focused on meeting the Prophet at 'the hawd' but not on meeting God in paradise.
4. More offended by imbeciles who mock the Prophet than those who mock God.
5. Framing salvation in the the person of the Prophet rather than the actions of the Most High.
6. Focusing on mystical aspects of the Prophet's actions, rather than divine causes/reasons.
7. Focused on loving the Prophet, but little on what it means to love God.
8. Memorising and singing qasa'id about the Prophet, but knowing little of the Quran.
9. Praising and remembering the Prophet more than God.
10. When religiosity *merely* becomes about venerating the messenger of God and not the message nor the One who sent it.
Umar b. al-Khattab related that the Prophet said: “Do not exaggerate in praising me as the Christians praised the son of Mary for I am merely a servant. So call me the servant of God and His messenger.” (al-Bukhari)
Ofc to speak of God’s emissary as average Joe is unbecoming of any believer, as if he was just some ordinary person. He was normal but certainly not ordinary. To speak of him with a mediocre regard is to offend God, since he's God's loved servant and held in the highest regard.
And learning about him entrenches us further in faith & commitment but it is not meant to turn our attention away from the message and the One who sent it, to the messenger instead.

That’s wholly irrational and illegitimate.
May God's peace and blessings be upon His noble servant & messenger Muhammad son of Abdullah from the Arabian tents of Kedar son of Ishmail, the direct descendant of the friend of God Abraham, and upon all of God's messengers.

And may God gather us w/ them in the afterlife, amen
"Muhammad...he is God’s Messenger & the seal of the prophets: God knows everything." (33:40)

"[God] will overlook bad deeds of those who have faith, do good deeds, & believe in what has been sent down to Muhammad (truth from their Lord) & will put them into a good state." (47:2)
"Muhammad is only a messenger before whom many messengers have been and gone. If he died or was killed, would you revert to your old ways? If anyone did so, he would not harm God in the least. God will reward the grateful." (3:144)
"Muhammad is the Messenger of God. Those with him are uncompromising towards (hostile & hateful) disbelievers, compassionate towards each other. You see them kneeling & prostrating seeking God’s bounty & good pleasure: on their faces they bear marks of their prostrations...
This is their depiction in the Torah & Gospel: like a seed putting forth its shoot, becomes strong, grows thick, & rises on its stem to the delight of its sowers...." (48:29)
