For eight years, @PeteButtigieg has blamed the city's first black police chief for an FBI investigation into secret police tapes.

But the cops on the tapes tell me the investigation was Buttigieg's fault:

@PeteButtigieg After the US attorney declined to bring charges in 2012, saying the calls were "mistakenly recorded," Buttigieg stood by his decision to demote Darryl Boykins.

He said the fact an investigation even happened disqualified Boykins from leadership.

(h/t twitter.com/ABC57News)
@PeteButtigieg The investigation, speculation around the tapes, and demotion of Boykins, proved to be a damaging turning point for the city, some of its leaders told me.

And the city has yet to recover.
@PeteButtigieg According to Steve Richmond, then-chief of the Investigative Division, he and Capt. Brian Young specifically told Buttigieg's chief of staff they wanted the mayor to deal with the tapes issue... specifically to AVOID the public scandal that could arise if they went to the feds.
@PeteButtigieg According to Richmond, Schmuhl said he would tell Buttigieg about the issue.

When Schmuhl called back later that day, he told Richmond he had briefed Buttigieg on it...

...and they weren't going to do anything about it.
@PeteButtigieg The city has secret documents alleging that some cops (not Richmond) used racist rhetoric, including re Boykins.

The cops deny some of those remarks and say others were misinterpreted...

...and that Buttigieg could have resolved the issue internally... without canning Boykins.
@PeteButtigieg I'm talking about this story, and taking your questions live, right now, on today's TYTI Daily:

@PeteButtigieg Buttigieg's campaign manager, Mike Schmuhl, was his chief of staff back in 2012, and confirmed in secret 2013 testimony that he and Buttigieg knew about all this and took no action.

We obtained his deposition last September:

@PeteButtigieg In his July 2013 deposition, Schmuhl confirms that Buttigieg knew about the issue before the feds did--so obviously before Boykins knew there was an FBI investigation...

...and that they chose to do nothing.
@PeteButtigieg I break down this story in today's edition of TYTI Daily, the webcast of @tytinvestigates, where we get in the weeds!
