This is a key point, and this is what’s wrong with the assumption that it is moral to provide everything through the state: It’s the abandonment of your neighborly stewardship to a too-big-to-care government. I write about this in #GraceCanceled.
The idea that the state is better at caring for people than individual people is a joke. The thousands of vets who died waiting for care from the VA comes to mind. Outsourcing stewardship to the state is lazy …
It isn’t virtuous to offload on the government those you claim to champion. It’s virtuous to meet them where they are voluntarily and fill that need with neighbors …
If these statists were truly virtuous they would ALREADY be acting as the hands and feet for those who need it most — instead they act incapable of doing it unless forced by government.
I follow Matthew 6:1-4 about charitable giving/acts. I think a lot of Christians do (I cover charity, socialism, and the church in a chapter of #GraceCanceled). It helps those in need, edifies the soul, and glorifies God, not government.
Sanders is admittedly unsupportive of charity washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/editor… , he’s flat out said that he "doesn’t believe" in them
nytimes.com/1981/09/19/nyr… . He believes in washing his hands of those in need by outsourcing stewardship to a bloated and inefficient government.
