many hopes pinned on remdesivir, experimental anti-viral drug.

It's for RNA viruses. Previously tested against Ebola, Nipah, MERS, in lab settings + animals.

Mechanism is classic wrench in the works. drug metabolized into ersatz nucleotides that mess up viral replication. 1/3
The drug is owned by Gilead, which used similar strategy of fake nucleotides to create its Hep C blockbuster, Solvadi. 2/3
An antiviral drug that beats coronavirus would be a lot more actionable than a vaccine in the near/medium term. 3/3

2/ First of all, claim comes from Rade Drmanac, scientific founder of Complete Genomics, acquired by BGI, now called BGI Group, and part of instrument subsdiary MGI. Got that?

3/ Their method doesn't use PCR to amplify the DNA. Allegedly makes it more accurate.

Group in Switzerland has recreated the coronavirus in part from synthetic DNA.

They ordered the genetic parts from a Chinese company, Genscript

This is a record. The sequence went online January 14th and this team managed to recreate the virus about a month later.

It wasnt wholly synthetic. They ended up getting a copy of the genome of the real virus from which they grabbed a couple of bits that proved hard to synthesize.

#China state TV flagged that researchers at Zhejiang Univ found 2 drugs #arbidol & #darunavir inhibit #coronavirus. Lead scientist is recommending the drugs be included in National Health Commission’s official protocol. Commission cautions so far no confirmed effective treatment.
#China National Health Commission revised its protocol for #WuhanCoronavirus. It is now:

-alpha-interferon (inhalation)
-lopinavir/ritonavir (2 pills twice a day)
-ribavirin (optional, 4g first time, followed by 1.2g every 8 hours)
#China health officials much more focused on anti-viral drug #remdesivir by @GileadSciences. State media report phase III clinical trials of remdesivir started this PM in #Wuhan, virus hot zone.

Patient went to a private hospital in Kericho on Sunday with fever, headache, sore throat, joint pains, puffy face & vomiting. She tested negative for malaria. ‘Out of caution’ she was referred to the County Hosp. & tested for #Ebola
Hospital officials tell me they made the decision because the patient had recently travelled from Malaba, at the Kenya-Ugandan border. Important to note there’s no known case of #Ebola in Malaba or anywhere in Eastern Uganda.
The outbreak of #Ebola in South-Western Uganda is so far being controlled. There’s no confirmed case currently in Uganda. 98 contacts are being monitored. Uganda has kept border with DRC open.

1. #Ebola: Big thing to watch in the DRC outbreak is whether #Merck's experimental vaccine gets used. It's the one that was shown effective in a ring trial in West Africa. (And yes, made at Canada's national lab. 🇨🇦)
2. #Ebola: @WHO contact tells me discussions have already begun with DRC about laying the groundwork to use the #Merck vaccine, if it's needed/wanted.
3. #Ebola: DRC had an Ebola outbreak last year around this time and there was a lot of "will they? won't they?" about the #Merck vaccine, which still hasn't been licensed. In the end, the outbreak was contained after only 8 cases & the vaccine wasn't needed.
