As COVID-19 spreads in the U.S., don’t assume new cases happened because other people known to have it or be exposed (Diamond Princess passengers for example) being brought back to quarantine here. Of all cases, those are the ones that are handled quite skillfully by experts.
I learned from @NYCMayor yesterday NYC is only testing people with flu symptoms who’ve travelled to China or had family/similar who did. We’ve tested 7 people total. We don’t have the ability to test in NYC.

Potentially hundreds of infected people have traveled to the U.S. already. Science from China shows tells us this virus spreads via asymptomatic people, and it spreads through the air.
Meanwhile U.S. officials are talking about this officially as if it only spreads by droplets, only presents as flu-like, and could only come from China (even as of Feb 26). I seriously hope they are actually much better informed.
I do worry about our preparedness. We seem to be acting from arrogance and old information.

China had a severe outbreak because we didn’t know anything about SARS-CoV-2 at first. Japan showed itself to be naive and arrogant. South Korea is doing an excellent job, monitoring the disease’s spread, protecting people, testing many tens of thousands of people. Italy, too.
The United States is not monitoring this disease like other countries. We are likely to have it seem to sneak up on us. Suddenly, many cases. Don’t blame the known cases already in quarantine. Don’t trust politicians who exhibit great arrogance. Find calm science-based experts.
Mayor de Blasio yesterday said repeatedly that the reason NYC doesn’t have any infections is because New Yorkers are good people. At one point, he even started to say other cities do have infections because they aren’t as good as us.
American arrogance.

I stand corrected. I underestimated the infection of incompetence spread through the Trump administration, in this case the HHS. Perhaps cases quarantined in U.S. have been spreading SARS-CoV-2.
