Although a #fintech entrepreneur myself, I've noted violations of regulations & standards on customer information request. E.g. there're Nigerian apps which do not allow you onboard until location info is disclosed, which is wrong- Emmanuel Agha #BigData

It was strange that @NITDANigeria required immediate compliance with its #NDPR, whereas EU had a 2yr period for #GDPR. Not surprising, many organisations aren't compliant and citizens aren't aware of their rights under NDPR- @SolomonOkedara

Private citizens whose privacy and other info-related rights could be violated ate a critical factor in enforcement. This is a key reason for a period of sensitization prior to implementation of #NDPR - @SolomonOkedara

From experience, citizens tend to sleep on their online-related rights. There was scepticism about our firm's strategic litigation on the Cybercrime Act a few years ago, before govt began using it to persecute opponents- @SolomonOkedara

#BigData assumes data in 'gazillions' of bytes. Nigeria hasn't arrived at that scale in data Volume yet, especially in externally generated Variety. H/ever, organisations should also plan to extract Value from internal Data- Prof. David West @LBSNigeria #SMWLagos2020

Because of limited volume in externally generated data, the secondary market for #BigData is not yet a thing in Nigeria. Also, weak culture of factuality affects Veracity, and dearth of talent in data mining affects Value- Prof. David-West @LBSNigeria #SMWLagos2020

Going to attempt this 100-opinion thread on digital products. Already stressed about trying to hit 100.
1/ Mediocre products can and do succeed. most people don’t want the “best” of anything, just the best for them given their context. This is something most product people get wrong; they think there is a prototypical ideal for the product they are building.
2/ Design doesn’t really matter as much as we think it does - people want the value on the other end of your product not the nice UI. 100 Design, 0 value = failed product. 0 design, 100 value = successful product. This is a multiply-by-zero situation where value is the key factor

It's looking increasingly like the Missouri legislature will make an end-run on gutting the extremely popular redistricting reform amendment passed by voters last November. #fairmaps 1/
In November, the Missouri amendment won with 62% of the vote, carrying 82 of 116 counties (including a majority of heavily Republican ones).

The handful of counties where it failed were mostly smaller ones.

The linked paper above is one older perspective. It was written just as the age of networking was beginning and published two years before the advent of Smalltalk-80 that brought in a new paradigm of Object Oriented Programming were objects communicate via passing of messages.
Functional Programming makes rather massive claims that it is somehow fundamentally different than the procedural programming that came before it. Both are based upon functions calling other functions with the passing of arguments as in Lambda Calculus mathematics. 🤔 Not new.

2. Framing and narratives matter. Seeing #data only as an asset (oil, gold, currency, etc) ignores implicit risks. Also seeing it as radioactive (with a half-life), an externality, a ticking time bomb, a liability, etc helps to locate it in a larger ecosystem. 2/n #GoingDigital
3. To a tech hammer, every socioeconomic problem looks like a tech nail. Informational asymmetries and power imbalances require attention to complex structural issues, not just on deployment of one size fits all tech solutions in a box. 3/n #GoingDigital
