2/ 1948: Israel issues its Declaration of Independence. The document contains deep tensions.

It asserts that Israel is a Jewish state but commits to “complete equality of social and political rights to all its inhabitants irrespective of religion, race or sex.” Image
3/ 1967: Israel conquers the overwhelmingly Palestinian West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Since then, it’s been more than 50 years of military occupation with no end in sight. Palestinians have neither sovereignty nor the right to vote in Israel's elections. bit.ly/2vdruvU
4/ 2009: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu re-enters office.

Under Netanyahu, the Israeli government has worked to turn Arab Muslims into second-class citizens, and has made it tougher for human rights groups to work in the country. bit.ly/2vdruvU
5/ As prime minister, Netanyahu has done more than any single other person to contribute to Israel’s democratic decline. bit.ly/2vdruvU Image
6/ Last year, Netanyahu was indicted on corruption-related charges.

If he succeeds at holding on to power, experts worry his authoritarianism could poison Israel’s democracy for good. bit.ly/2vdruvU Image
7/ @zackbeauchamp traveled to Israel to investigate the decline of democracy in Israel.
