Another decade of the Israel-Palestine conflict ends and a peaceful and just solution for the Palestinians seems further out of reach. Look back at the moments that shaped history in Palestine and Israel, and will continue to shape the future of the region for years to come.
2010: A glimmer of hope at the beginning of the Obama era

In his historic "A New Beginning" speech in Cairo on June 4, 2009, Obama promised to mend relations with the Muslim world, and highlighted peace between Israel & Palestine as key to that goal.

2010: Gaza Freedom Flotilla

The world was shaken after an Israeli commando raid on the Gaza Freedom Flotilla, 6 civilian ships – 3 passenger ships and 3 cargo ships, headed for the Gaza Strip. 10 activists were killed in a late night raid.

2010: Israel ends a 10-month freeze of settlement construction

The decision would help pave the way for a decade of unprecedented settlement expansion in the occupied Palestinian territory.
2011: Palestine tries, and fails, to be recognized as UN member state

President Abbas announced that the State of Palestine would apply for full membership in the U.N. Obama vowed to veto the application and Palestine failed to gather the required votes.
2011: Palestine wins seat in @UNESCO

The move was celebrated by Palestinian activists, but met with fierce opposition by Israel and the U.S., which halted funding to UNESCO immediately after the decision, in accordance with a 1990 U.S. law.
2012: Israeli Civil Administration covertly set aside West Bank land for settlement expansion

It was revealed that the Israeli Civil Administration had been secretly allocating portions of West Bank land — some 10% of the entire territory — for future settlement expansion.
2012: Operation “Pillar of Defense” devastates #Gaza

Israeli forces assassinated Ahmed Jabari, chief of the military wing of Hamas. Over the following week, Israel claimed to strike 1,500 “militant” targets. More than 100 civilians died and hundreds were injured.
2012: UNGA resolution upgrading Palestine to non-member observer state status

After an unsuccessful 2011 bid for full member status, Palestinians celebrated after the UN General Assembly overwhelmingly voted to upgrade Palestine to non-member observer state status.
2012: In response to Palestine upgrade at the UN, Israel approves settlement construction in E1

One day after Palestine’s status at the UN was upgraded, Israel responded by approving preliminary zoning & construction plans for settlements in the E1 area of the West Bank.

2013: @JohnKerry begins US-led peace talks

For the first time in nearly 3 years, Israeli & Palestinian leaders met for direct peace negotiations. Less than a year later, the negotiations fell apart. During the 9 months of talks, Israel set a new record for settlement expansion.
2013: Pre-Oslo prisoners released from Israeli jails

As part of the peace talks, Israel agreed to release 104 Palestinian prisoners it had promised, and failed, to release in 1999. On March 28, 2014, Israel failed to release the fourth group of prisoners.
2014: Operation Brother’s Keeper turns West Bank upside down

In June, 3 Israeli teens were kidnapped while hitchhiking in the West Bank's Hebron district, sparking the largest Israeli operation in the West Bank since the 2nd Intifada. 5 Palestinians died, hundreds were arrested.
2014: Kidnapping & murder of Muhammed Abu Khdeir

Days after Operation Brother's Keeper ended, a 16-year-old Palestinian boy from East Jerusalem was kidnapped by a group of young Israelis. Hours later, his body was found near a Jerusalem forest. The boy had been burned alive.

A few days after Mohammed Abu Khdeir's killing, a video went viral showing undercover Israeli officers violently beating up his cousin, 15-year-old U.S. citizen Tariq Khdeir, as he was handcuffed and pinned to the ground.
2014: Operation Protective Edge in #Gaza

After weeks of tension following the killings of the 3 Israeli teens & Abu Khdeir, and days of rocket fire between Israel & Gaza, Israel launched “Operation Protective Edge,” the deadliest and most destructive attack on Gaza in 7 years.
2015: Dawabsheh family murders

Masked settlers firebombed the Dawabsheh family home in the village of Duma, killing 18-month-old Ali Dawabsheh and both of his parents. 4-year-old Ahmed Dawabsheh was the only survivor, and suffered severe burns across more than 80% of his body.
2015: The “Third Intifada” begins

On the eve of Rosh Hashanah, dozens of Israelis entered the Al-Aqsa compound in East Jerusalem under the protection of armed Israeli authorities. This sparked protests and violent reactions from Israeli forces.
2016: Elor Azaria executes incapacitated Palestinian

Israeli forces shot Abdel Fattah al-Sharif in Hebron as he attempted to stab a group of soldiers. As he laid incapacitated on the ground, Israeli medic-soldier Elor Azaria shot al-Sharif in the head, killing him.

The killing, which was recorded by a local Palestinian activist, sparked widespread anger. Azaria was sentenced to 18 months in prison & 12 months probation. He was released after only 9 months to a hero’s welcome.
2017: Trump announces Jerusalem as the capital of Israel

In perhaps the most defining moment of the latter half of the decade, President @realDonaldTrump announced that the U.S. would be recognizing #Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

The decision sparked widespread protests that lead to the arrest & injury of hundreds of Palestinians. The decision was welcomed by Israel, severely damaging the P.A.'s relationship with the U.S. administration.
2017: Ahed Tamimi arrested for slapping Israeli soldier

Ahed Tamimi was propelled onto the international stage after she was arrested by Israeli forces in the middle of the night for slapping an Israeli soldier in the face during a raid on her village of Nabi Saleh.

Her case helped shed a new light on the issue of Palestinian child prisoners & the struggles of Palestinian youth under occupation. By the time she was released, she had reached star status in Palestine and beyond.
2018: #GreatReturnMarch begins in #Gaza

When Ahmed Abu Artema thought up the idea of a “Great March of Return” in his besieged home of the Gaza Strip, little did he know he would be birthing one of the largest Palestinian popular movements in decades.

In May 2018, ignoring the pleas of European governments and senior US politicians, the Israeli Supreme Court gave the final greenlight for the demolition of the Bedouin community of Khan al-Ahmar.
2018: 25th anniversary of the Oslo Accords

25 years after the Oslo Accords, Israel has extended its rule further into the occupied territory, and the PA developed into a despotic regime, focused more on quashing dissent & policing free speech than achieving liberation.
2018: @RashidaTlaib first Palestinian woman elected to Congress

Since her election, Tlaib has been outspoken in her defense of the #BDS movement and her criticism of Israel’s occupation of the West Bank.
2018: Trump’s vendetta against the Palestinians

Trump has severely damaged the diplomatic relations between the U.S. and Palestinian leadership, endangered the lives of millions of the most vulnerable Palestinians who rely on U.S. and int'l aid for some of their basic needs.

After 24 years in Washington, the Palestinian Liberation Organization’s (PLO) diplomatic mission in DC was closed following instructions from the Trump administration to shut down their operations in the U.S.

Benjamin Netanyahu caused a stir in the US government after banning congresswoman @RashidaTlaib & @IlhanMN from entering the country on an official delegation, over their support for the #BDS movement.
2019: Netanyahu vows to annex Jordan Valley

A week before Israel’s 2nd round of elections, @Netanyahu announced that if reelected, he would annex all Israeli settlements, the Jordan Valley, and the northern Dead Sea area of the occupied West Bank.

2019: Wave of feminist protests sparked after of honor killings in West Bank

The “honor killing” of Israa Ghrayeb, sparked widespread protests, with women expressing anger at the practice of honor killings & inaction of local authorities in pursuing justice for the young woman.
2019: US: Settlements no longer illegal

US Sec. of State Pompeo announced the U.S. was softening its position on Israel’s illegal settlements, saying it was revoking the notion that settlements are illegal under international law.
