What's telling about Chris Matthews' farewell comments is how he characterized his long history of sexism as simply making "compliments on a woman’s appearance." He wants this to be about something it's not
Condescending leering remarks aren't "compliments." Nor is joking about a "Bill Cosby pill" or saying a female politician's voice is “fingernails on a blackboard.”

Matthews wants it to seem as if he was just behind the times - but the truth is that his behavior was ALWAYS wrong
Anyway, spare me the "farewell to a giant" takes we'll see over the next few days. He was a fucking jerk and should have been fired ages ago.

This should concern all female reporters. If women who have been sexually harassed or assaulted are not considered objective, you're going to have a *really* hard time finding any women to write about these issues
And that's the rub - no matter what you think about how or when it's appropriate to talk about something after a tragedy, WaPo let PR trump their own reporter's safety

Now you know that yes, I absolutely *can* hold a grudge for years: Here's Ryan writing about my breasts in 2007 and how I'm "not shy about my body" because of the title of my first book.
Oh, and he did a FOLLOW UP CHAT about whether or not I used my "sexuality for self-promotion." He also claimed he tried to reach me for comment but that his email must have...malfunctioned?

We were asked to comment on this, which has been a key part of our analysis for some years. Those who would dismiss Sanders dismiss the anger that brought Trump to power as entirely one-sided, far right, or bigoted. It's not.
Those who would dismiss Sanders as a particular disease of fantasist Democrat kids also ignore the social and economic forces that are driving populist movements of all stripes around the world. They believe we can "revert to the mean," as it were.
As I have argued for four years and more, as distasteful as it may be to you, the Trump-Sanders voter is likely the only one left in play, and probably just numerous enough in key states to matter.

Western Publishing has a long history with comic books. Like Nintendo, they did playing cards, but branched out to Big Little Books in the 1930s.

While not considered comic books for both physical and content reasons, these are heavily illustrated stories.
Comic book fans often focus on writers and artists, but it takes a lot to make a comic book, including printing presses. Western established a press north of NYC, which opened doors for relations with Dell Publishing.
Dell and Western would establish a long partnership for a quarter of a century. Dell financed and distributed the comics, while Western printed them.

This Day in Labor History: May 26, 1924. Calvin Coolidge signs the Immigration Act, effectively shutting off immigrant labor from entering the nation, except from Mexico, and ending an era of our history, demonstrating how racism can often trump other concerns.
Immigrants from southern and eastern Europe seemed to threaten American values for reasons outside their funny religions, peasant clothing, and garlic-eating ways. Most people came to the U.S. for the precise reason they do today: to make money for their families back home.
Like Mexicans and Guatemalans today, many hoped to make money and then return and maybe buy some land and build a little house in their home village. And many did that–for groups like the Italians and Greeks there was significant out-migration.

Recent rhetoric about “The Enlightenment” is bizarre. A major strand of the Enlightment was about the Perfectibility of Man through Reason. The revolutionary reconstruction of society. The French Revolution is a child of the E & the Bolshevik Revolution one of its grandchildren.
It’s as if the fans of the Counter-Enlightenment forgot themselves and have appropriated the Enlightenment.
“The Enlightenment” cannot be selectively and whiggishly reduced to liberalism and natural science. The Enlightenment is also synonymous with scientism and rationalist social engineering.
