This is why we need to break out of the black-white binary, which prevents people from understanding racism directed at Asians, Latinos, and First Nations people.

I, as an Asian American, have no greater chance of having Covid-19 than anyone else in the United States, yet I see the ways people look at me when I cough.

It’s the same racism that justifies racial profiling of middle easterners at the airport or black people in in the street.
Asians constantly face the same fundamental forms of racism. We are used to promote racism against black & brown people when it’s convenient (e.g. why can’t you be like the Asians?) & we are the target of racism when we are perceived to be a threat.

Whenever you hear things like Asians are overrepresented in a particular space, it stems from racist ideology that can be traced back to equating Asians as a disease. This is why language like Asian invasion, Yellow Peril, or even Yellow Fever, is employed.
Why is it that Asians can be considered overrepresented in any particular space? It’s because we are considered the perpetual foreigner, even if we’ve been here for multiple generations and never stepped foot elsewhere. It’s rooted in the idea that we are outsiders.
