More seriously, one of the urgent tasks facing the new Leader of the Opposition will be to work out a direction of travel in response to this. A Labour government in 2023/24 will want to reverse as much as possible of this damage and work our way back in to various EU frameworks.
That will require some thought about what is possible politically in the UK, what is likely to be acceptable to the EU, and building up strong relationships with EU politicians.
And though the details will inevitably have be filled in later, articulating an alternative vision now will (a) signal to the EU that this Govt is a one-off in its dogmatic hostility and (b) dispel the falsehoods that this is an inevitable consequence of Brexit and has a mandate.
