I hate when people say that Snyder is "style over substance" because they're completely misunderstanding what Cinema is.
As a VISUAL medium, being a strong visual narrator gives the strongest help possible in telling a story.
His visuals can tell a better story than a 10m dialogue
"But his stories aren't good!!1!"
Yet again: you're wrong.
What makes a good story? Relatable characters? An interesting world? A well done plot? Original ideas?
Because many people say that his movies are bad because of narrative faults, yet they fail to address those faults.
Most, if not all of the time, the find themselves arguing about the same, worn out criticism.
"The movie is too dark, Batman/Superman are not like these, style over substance, dark filters" and those are NOT legitimate critiques.
Well, they could be, if the phrase before those critiques is "In my opinion". Sadly, those people have an overgrown ego and feel like thier opinion is The Truth.
Movies are Art and Art is, and forever will be, subjective.
I can love Van Gogh and hate Picasso, but +
anyone would call me insane if I said that Guernica was objectively a bad painting just because it's not like The Starry Night.
Art has been trivialized by Hollywood but we should all thrive to be better, realising that what makes art Art is not an uniformed canon.
It's the drive
of the artist behind it.
Art is Art because an artists, or a group of them, came together and crafted something that was true for them, giving all their soul while making it.
What Snyder makes, his movies, are undoubtedly Art and that's objectively undeniable.
As Art, a product should be respected NO MATTER WHAT. You can dislike it, but you can never discredit it.
Imagine acting like, idk, BvS is a bad movie (objectively) because "It's too dark".
Too dark from what?
What YOU wanted it to be?
Snyder, as an artist, has the OBLIGATION of
making stuff his own. If he, the artist, has chosen that his world is that one, audiences have only the right to accept it or don't.
They cannot say that he couldn't do it or, worse, he should have done better because that's HIS story and, as long as it's true for himself, it's
legitimate and deserving of respect.
You want a BvS movie to be light? Go write your own script, shoot a tease and send it to WB. That will be your own, legitimate story.
But Snyder has EARNED the right of making whatever the hell he wants.
If he feels like his work should be +
about realistic themes he has the obligation to himself to do it.
Because, and this will lead me to my other points, BvS is not dark. It's realistic.
A world where an alien, who inadvertently brough war to us, is shunned by a torn public opinion is not "dark". It's a Tuesday.
A world where a billionaire manipulates people into hating an alien and people like him?
Have you ever seen the news?

A world where a men, once fair and just, was broken down by every tragedy possible into becoming the villain?

Batman V Superman is the most realistic cbm ever.
And I will forever cherish Snyder's trilogy (#ReleaseTheSnyderCut) because they took the most important fictional characters of the 20th century and made them clash in OUR world.
Clark feels the weight of the world on his shoulders and, sometimes, he's sad. Why wouldn't he?
He's a farmboy from Kansas with God-like powers. He sees people die every day. He saves countless people, and the world, all of the time. He does that without asking fir anything in return...and what does he get?

"Should there be a Superman?"

He becomes the public enemy.
But is he always sad? Does he show only one emotion: endless despair?

No.

Because he's a farmboy from Kansas.

He's one of us.

He's happy when he's with his mother.

He's happy when he's with his fianceé.

He's happy when he's doing good.

That's a realistic character.
So no, BvS is not dark.
It's realistic.
Get over it.

But what about "Batman kills! My peepee hurts when he kills :,("

Batman has always killed in comics and movies. Kane and Finger's did, Burton's did, Nolan's did.
Snyder's (and Affleck's) is the ONLY Batman that addresses his ruthless disregard for human life (making him manslaughter many people) NARRATIVELY.
Bruce has fallen into darkness, even madness, after 20 years of losses and death.

The Black Zero Event, then, completely broke him.
He has new rules, but he doesn't even accept it.
For him, he's always been like this.
Only Alfred, his conscience, can see how low he's falling and has fallen.
For him, criminals are weeds that, if taken out, are instantly replaced by other weeds.
He sees his life as a failure.
Why would he care about a goon's life if the life of the world was at stake?
He has a mission and he will not stop at anything to complete it.

Quite literally, I might add.

And this is because he IS NOT HIMSELF ANYMORE.
He's doing all of that for one goal:break his rule.
All people he killed were considerable manslaughter but this one? A straight murder.
Batman wanted to kill Superman.
Put a spear in his heart and watch as the monster, the alien, died.
Because Superman is not a God.
Nor a man.
Then, the epiphanic moment: Superman is not a machine that saves us for sport. He's not here as a tired, maybe belevolent, ruler.

He's a man.

He has a mother.

He has a fianceé.

He has loved ones.

He is here for a reason and he was going to DIE to save his mother.
But why does Bruce stop? Because, out there, someone made so that a dark man, broken by his mother's death, one day was going to murder an alien from a different galaxy...and his mother's name was going to be the same.
The universe wanted them to stop.
Bruce, driven to this life since his parents' murder, hears the word that triggers in him the PTSD that made him dress like a bat for 20 years (and made him feel dead inside since he was 8).

Martha.

The reason why he didn't become a murderer just stopped him from taking a life.
He becomes the most enraged person ever. He screams, but is so shocked he doesn't move...not even when someone else jumps to protect his victim.

It's his mother's name.

It's his mother's name.

Bruce Wayne doesn't know how to act anymore.

Who is he?

What was he going to do?
He throws away the weapon, still shocked, and makes his mortal enemy a promise.

The world needs you, Superman. That threat looks like something I cannot stop.

But "I make you a promise. Martha won't die tonight".

Batman has one chance at saving his mother.
Yes, his own mother.
Because Bruce is relieving EVERYTHING HE WENT THROUGH THE NIGHT HIS PARENTS DIED.
He knows this will be the last time he will be able to, at least metaphorically, save his mother.
Saving Martha Kent mends something in Bruce's soul.
And the warehouse scene show us exactly that.
"But then, why does he kill these men?"
Because he's not stopping.
He might be on the path of redemption but he's still broken.
He sees these people and sees individuals that WILL let Martha die.
Batman promised Martha wouldn't die.
And he will make ANYTHING to make sure of that.
Batman fights, in the warehouse, like a beast.
But he does not kill nor brand anyone.
Why?
Because he's going through a REDEMPTION ARC.
He manslaughtered those men outside.
Now, he's not.
He could have done it, but he wont.
He's getting everything back under control.
And now: KGBeast.
Anatoly threatens Batman: he will do it, unless he drops the weapon.
Batman has the machinegun in his hands and him on the crosshair.
He could easily shoot him in the head.
But what does he do?
He believes him
He shoots the tank.
His weapon.
His own downfall.
What does, eventually, completely solidify the new path of redemption he has chosen to follow?
The death of Superman.
He sees this selfless individual die for Bruce and Lex's sins and swears that there shall be a new path ahead, one different from the one he followed before.
Diana: "Men made a world where standing together is impossible."
And this is Batman's new oath.
Bruce: "Men are still good. We fight, we kill, we betray one another. But we can rebuild, we can do better. We will. We have to."
Batman gets a new mission of life, thanks to Superman.
But can we see him actually redeemed? Words are good and all but we haven't seen him do anything since his new oath was taken (because Zack Snyder's Justice League still hasn't been released, #ReleaseTheSnyderCut).

But...are we sure about that?
Because we see Batman one last time.
He pays a visit to mass murderer, criminal mastermind and individual who has bamboozled Batman: Lex Luthor.
Batman could do two things now.
He could kill him, but we've seen he's no murderer...or he could brand him.
Branding Lex would mean a probable death sentence on him, especially since he's going to Arkham Asylum(thanks Bats).
But what does he do instead?
He smashes his Bat-brand into the wall and leaves him unharmed.
Because he's not Judge, Jury and Executioner anymore.
He's The Batman.
This is why Batmam kills in BvS and that's also why it's the only movie where him killing makes perfect narrative sense.

To conclude this thread: about the dark filters.

Y'all need Jesus, an ophthalmologist and to go study Cinema.

Ignorant buffoons.
