1/ Bridgewater Dalio’s Macro fund plunged about 20% this year as market tanked. Half the ‘managed’ capital in this strategy.

2/ Reiterating i believe very smart, very pedigreed, very hard-working people work at Bridgewater. They put out very well written research––which is marketing for clients. None of them are involved in investing. Continues to seem an intellectual facade + excellent marketing.

1/ OBSERVATION: a silver lining of coronavirus

CONSIDER:
PHASE 1
-22 boys (each 11, 12 years old)
-put into 2 separate groups unaware of the others’ existence
-each group bonds alone over fun + games and naturally form a tribe...
2/PHASE 2
...The tribes come up with names (“the Rattlers”, “the Eagles”)
-After a week isolated together they encounter eachother for the first time
-immediately “US” vs “THEM” instinct kicks in
-they want to compete in a tournament w/tug of war + sports...
3/...After a 1st contest playing Baseball, the name calling began. Then the Eagles BURNED(!) the Rattlers flag. The Rattlers retaliated. The Eagles tore up a 2nd Rattler flag. That night the Rattlers raided the Eagles camp stealing stuff + ransacking bunks. They met for a FIGHT.

As an Indian American who has now lived in the US for 25 years, my connection to current news events there is fairly tenuous other than around major political or sports events. However recent developments on #Kashmir have been of historic significance.
In the Western media we are seeing reporting and Op-Ed's reflecting Pakistan's point of view & journalists approach the topic from the perspective of sympathy to the "underdog" which is the supposedly beleaguered Muslim population of the region.
I think this reporting has been at a very superficial level and leaves a lot of holes in providing appropriate context. In particular, comparisons to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict or to the China Uyghur Muslim persecution are completely off-base.

When I started my first tenure track position, I was handed the key to my office and basically told to "go get tenure". Fortunately, I had great advisors who helped me figure out how to do that. I'd like to share some of that advice. 1/ @UFCISE @uf_fics
This advice is heavily biased towards positions in Computer Science at R1 universities. There's likely lots of survivorship bias, which means that some of this advice is bad for you. That said, I hope that there are a few things in here that are useful to everyone. 2/
1) Define what success is for you, then tell everyone else. Demand on that being how you are evaluated. I try to focus on impact. That could be a top quality publication, or kicking off a start-up. Folks in your department need to know why what you've done has value. 3/
