If you are perplexed why so many events are being cancelled given that so few people have coronavirus in the US, consider this from @asymmetricinfo. It will help explain the urgency that you are now sensing from policy-makers (who may be a little late to this themselves).

"There’s an old brain teaser that goes like this: You have a pond of a certain size, and upon that pond, a single lilypad. This particular species of lily pad reproduces once a day, so that on day two, you have two lily pads. On day three, you have four, and so on."

/2
"Now the teaser. 'If it takes the lily pads 48 days to cover the pond completely, how long will it take for the pond to be covered halfway?'

The answer is 47 days. Moreover, at day 40, you’ll barely know the lily pads are there."

"That grim math explains why so many people — including me — are worried about the novel coronavirus, which causes a disease known as covid-19. And why so many other people think we are panicking over nothing."

We had about 130 confirmed cases in the U.S. last Friday. By Monday, it was over 500. Today, it's over a 1,000. We are doubling lily pads right now, so it's not hard to see where this could go unless we implement measures now.

/5
Many people are late to this realization, but better now than three weeks from now.

/6
If policy-makers delay too long, then healthcare systems can be overrun and some people not even receive treatment.

We need to take serious measures now. And we need to all be on board for each other during the challenges ahead.
