What would happen if we only counted the death rate for the people that went to the hospital with the flu each year? or those that just needed medical care?

Well let's see, shall we?
Per CDC
Conclusion. CDC estimates that influenza was associated with more than 35.5 million illnesses, more than 16.5 million medical visits, 490,600 hospitalizations, and 34,200 deaths during the 2018–2019 influenza season.(Jan 8, 2020)
So, if you "run the numbers"

the death rate for the 2018-2019 season was 0.1% and of those needing a medical visit was 0.2%

The death rate for those needing hospitalizations was a whooping 7%

7% OMG according to the media that must mean we are all going to die from the flu.

.....leaving out actually variables like the travel ban, quarantines, canceling large gatherings, better hygiene, containment, mitigation, more testing. Nope, ignore all that and "run the numbers". Figure 70% of the population will get the virus even though the actual numbers

Lebanon, Rwanda, Afghanistan... all examples of cramming different peoples together in a limited space with the command to rule together in an artificial entity we know as the nation-state, a concept introduced outside of #Europe only in the aftermath of the colonial onslaught.
After centuries of bloody and large-scale wars and conflicts, European states achieved internal mono-cultures that grew into rival centralist nation-states, each bound by its own dominant language, culture and history, gradually grown through years of bloodshed and power games.
During the de-colonization period, this rigid mold was used to give shape to European-styled nation-states in the former #colonies, lands mostly unfamiliar with the notions of mono-lingual and mono-cultural ethno-states that became so typical for the European political scene.
