New infections declining would be a pretty big (positive) sign if it's sustained over a couple of days.
Keep in mind also that the *reported* number of new infections is a lagging indicator of *actual* infections. It takes time for people to become symptomatic, get tested, get results. It's going to be even more lagging in the US because we're so far behind on testing capabilities.
Let's say in the US (1) social distancing slows the rate of spread beginning ~today *and* (2) testing capabilities rapidly ramp up. That's what we're hoping for.🤞 Well, we're still gonna see big spikes in new *reported* cases because we'll finally detect what we had all along.
