When you grow up poor you learn how to make a lot of food that is super cheap. When I was in the domestic Peace Corps I taught folks how to do this. btw, a delicious meal for four is a bag of 20c ramen and a bag of fresh mixed veg salad. In the microwave. Add hot sauce to taste.
Apparently I wasn't clear that YES the salad goes in with the ramen in the microwave in the same bowl for a pseudo-Asian soup.
Another good inexpensive meal is frittata. One egg per person. One medium yellow onion sliced. Two or three large white potatoes, sliced. Saute onion till clear. Boil potatoes with the onion until soft. Use as little water as possible as you will add the eggs to this.>>
>>Whisk the eggs together with black pepper and Tabasco or hot sauce if you want it spicy. Pour into the onions and potatoes. Cook on low heat until the eggs are done. Sprinkle with cheese if available. Serves four to six adults cheaply. You can also add spinach or a courgette.
