Well I started prepping in advance of the first "online only" week at UBC next week. In case it's useful to anyone else, here's what I plan to do, and some refections so far (incase anyone has tips, or incase others find my reflection at all useful).
Lectures are pre-recorded, not live. I'm just using quicktime, which allows me to do video segments of me speaking into the camera, but then also to record my screen, when I switch to powerpoint slides with voiceover, or screen capture for annotating PDF scores.
I plan to encourage students to view the videos around the regular scheduled class time, though they're hosted on the course website for viewing whenever suits them.
During the "viewing party" time slots (regular scheduled class time, and regular office hours) I'll be fielding student questions in the Canvas "group chat." And then also scheduling study sessions and group-office hour drop-ins using web conferencing features within Canvas.
Reflections: I've started pre-recording the lectures, And lecturing to the computer screen in an empty apartment is harder than delivering it in class!
I've had a bit more success recording 10–15 minute chunks, then taking a break, and stitching the clips together afterward.
the lecture videos will be a bit shorter than the actual in-class lecture time, because when I reach a point where i want them to answer on-screen questions, I just ask them to pause the video till they've worked out their answers, then hit resume when they want my answers.
It's not going to be a perfect replacement but I think we can make the best of it. Our semester system means there's only 3 weeks to go, so I want students to be able to wrap up the course that the've nearly completed with minimal feeling of disruption.
