It's beyond depraved that Trump is still trying to discredit the media at exactly the moment when it is picking up *his* slack, informing the American people about a public emergency that Trump himself has tried to mislead them about for weeks. New piece:

Trump raged at @Yamiche for asking about his dispanding of the WH pandemic office.

I went back and looked. The pattern is unmistakable: Trump tends to lash out at reporters most angrily when they try to hold him accountable for his own words and deeds:

@Yamiche Trump is telling Americans not to trust an institution that's informing them about a public emergency in a way he will not. All because that institution is imposing accountability on him that he'd never impose on himself.

@Yamiche Great piece by @anneapplebaum. Trump's attacks on civil service and governing capacity helped lay groundwork for current disaster. I tried to develop this in my piece, in context of Trump's relentless lying, but here Applebaum hits the truly big themes:
