Short thread on Vancouver declaring a state of emergency.

- It will last for seven days at first, but can be extended
- It's being done through the province's Emergency Management Act, not the Vancouver Charter
- Here are the relevant provisions
Why does a local state of emergency matter when B.C. has just declared one?

- Vancouver has a lot of staff and a lot of knowledge that can put to use
- This will allow the city to streamline/centralize its own services
- It will also free up provincial resources
"So, are restaurants indefinitely closed then?"

- Restaurants aren't closed YET (bars are, however, through a provincial order)
- Places can stay open if they keep to under 50 people + enforce social distancing
- BUT a full ban on in-person dining in Vancouver likely coming soon
When does Vancouver's emergency declaration *officially* happen?

Tomorrow morning, 10am, emergency virtual council meeting.

Details of how the city will deploy the act will also start being announced tomorrow morning.
