Albert Kahn, Burroughs Adding Machine Company Manufacturing Plant (1939) Plymouth, MI
Burroughs was founded in St. Louis in 1886 by William Seward Burroughs, originally the American Arithmometer Co. The company moved to Detroit in 1904 and changed its name a year later, quickly becoming the largest adding machine manufacturer in America.
The original Burroughs factory in Detroit was built along Second Avenue south of New Center. By the 1930’s the company required even more factory space, and plans were made for a new manufacturing facility on a rural site outside the city.
In 1953 the company simplified its name to Burroughs Corporation and shifted its focus to computers—by the 1960’s it was a (distant) second to IBM in sales. These early computers were featured in many films and TV shows:
Burroughs Power Plant, currently being renovated but having unfortunately lost its smokestack along the way.
