Higher co-infection rates in COVID19 - Nigam Shah

Of 562 #CV19 patients, 181 were also tested for Flu A/B/RSV & 336 tested with RESPCR2 panel.

Of the 562 patients, 127 (22.6%) were +ve for other viruses. (24.5% if we use 181+336 = 517 as denominator).

Of the 49 positive SARS-COV-2 results, 11 (22.4%) also had a co-infection. This co-infection rate is much higher than previously reported rates.
The US strategy of only moving on to COVID testing IF Flu’ etc has been rules out is clearly pretty dangerous. Quite likely to have flu’ AND COVID.

Chinese studies: CV19 sheds virus particulars for 20 days, both transmitting pre and post symptoms, suggesting quarantine periods may need to be longer raising new containment challenges.

Ingrained hand washing & hygiene measures particularly important.

Answering one of my questions, it seems that those given anti viral medication, did not reduce the period of the virus shedding.

This may mean that anti virals should be administered for longer.
It is estimated that 44% of transmissions occur before the infected person displays symptoms.

Contact tracing and isolation alone unlikely to be successful at containment, hence the need for social distancing an excellent hygiene

Also a reminder that by far the largest group testing positive for #CV were in the 20-29 age group (& linked to the Shincheongi religious community.

Next largest 50-59 yr old.

It is therefore a very different demographic to Italy. BUT South Korea learned from the hard experience of MERS in 2015 where they realised they had to contain the spread early on and that needed both diagnostic testing and systematic tracing plus quarantine

And they were ready
Not only had they had a very hard experience from MERS but that led to a systematic review and action plan ready should another such outbreak occur. It felt real.
And they tested it.

And corrected it

And realised in December that neighbouring China might have something similar

Till date 1,14,705 passengers have been screened in Karnataka.
The details of points of entry are as follows.

A challenge w/ #COVID is that panic, itself, is contagious—an “infodemic.”

Without strong, evidence-driven leadership, local leaders default to the most stringent policies.

We’re seeing this at all levels—from banning travel from Europe to shutting down schools.
