Given debate about Trump calling #sarscov2 “Chinese virus” I just looked up the story I wrote about the tricky business of naming inf diseases, when WHO released new rules for that 5 years ago. Realized it contains one of my favorite quotes from any story. sciencemag.org/news/2015/05/d…
‘Growing up in China in the late 1960s, Wang remembers that diseases had digits. “I was really scared of number 5 disease,” he recalls. “I don’t know why, you just really did not want to get disease number 5.”’
Story also says: “Giving new diseases a number may be the only way to avoid such issues, researchers say.” Guess that part turned out to be true. Looking at you #covid19 and #Sarscov2.

Merkel as usual measured and calm in her #covid19 statement. Only two things to do right now, she says: Prepare hospitals for expected surge in cases. And distance ourselves physically from each other. She thanks everyone who adhered to #PhysicalDistancing rules already.
Long list of new measures that will essentially further reduce public life and contacts: Contacts outside of own household should be reduced to absolute minimum and distance of at least 1,5 meters kept from other people in public.
„The most important thing is to adhere to the safety distance“, says Merkel. Even if we’re not used to it from our previous lives, it makes a huge difference now in times of #covid19 whether you stand half a meter or one and a half meters apart, she says.

Hard to believe that it is a month ago today that I wrote this thread. Feels like yesterday but also like eons ago. Looking back, it is clear that time really was up and we live in a different world now. So let me try and give you an idea of where I think we are now with #covid19
The virus has gone around the world at astonishing speed. @WHO wrote in its situation report Thursday that it took 3 months to reach the first 100,000 cases, 12 days to reach the second 100,000. Tomorrow’s sitrep will probably have more than 300,000 cases. That’s four days.
@WHO From the beginning everyone’s biggest worry was always that we would see more Wuhans. There was a weird complacency in many places thinking that #covid19 would not lead to the same situation in other countries.

Well, here's another one, by Buzzfeed, no less. They KNEW that Trump worked WITH the FBI, yet they participated in the conspiracy against him to frame him as the guilty one.
