On Testing: Maybe sometime next week the US will be up to 70,000+ tests per day. We need a plan in place to dramatically expand tracking and surveillance testing - we need to look for the asymptomatic carriers. 1/
Finding the asymptomatic carriers is key to getting the economy back on track (and not just slowing the spread, but preventing another surge in cases). 2/
Everyone can do their part by keeping track of where they go - and who they talk with - over the next few weeks. That way, if someone becomes sick with COVID-19 they can tell the trackers who to test 3/
The government should be training thousands of trackers (including proper protective gear) to do this job. And the government needs to quarantine (probably in their home) anyone testing positive. South Korea calls these people twice a day … until they test negative twice. 4/
the priority on PPE is the healthcare workers. We can't forget that. South Korea is testing the equivalent of about 75,000 people per day - it is only a small fraction of their total population. We have to be smart in who we test, and that is why tracking is important. 5/
Usually I'd assume the government is on top of this, but we know that isn't a good assumption. I'd like someone to be named head of tracking - and provide daily updates on the number of surveillance tests being performed, and the number of people under quarantine. 6/
Soon the US will have 50,000+ cases and more. So our top priority is to support and protect our healthcare workers and provide them the necessary equipment. Currently the priority is to test people with symptoms, those with close contact to someone infected, care providers 7/
But hopefully soon we will have enough testing capacity to take care of those high priorities and move to more surveillance. These can be different people - and we should be looking ahead and be ready to go when the testing capacity reaches that point /8
