No matter who you are or what you do, right now you should be focused on your health - and not about whether you will lose your job or run out of money for things like groceries or medicine. So today, we announced our plan that will help you and your family. ⤵️
If you do not qualify for Employment Insurance and do not have access to paid sick leave but have to self-isolate or quarantine, or if you need to take care of a family member who has COVID-19, you can receive an Emergency Care Benefit every two weeks for 14 weeks.
If you have kids, we will boost your Canada Child Benefit to help with the increase in childcare costs as schools remain closed. And in the coming months, we will add more to your GST Credit - every adult who qualifies will get up to $300, and every child up to $150.

If w/in a few weeks millions could be out of work & untold thousands of businesses forced to close in California alone, as a result of the due-process/cost-benefit-analysis-free total shutdown of a major world economy, how many people will suffer mental health breakdowns/suicide?
Speaking as a small business owner, a lot of one's self-worth & dignity is tied up in having a business, having a job, having a way to pay the mortgage, the rent, the kids' bills. A small check from the government or a loan, is no replacement. And for what? Where's the analysis?
The answer is many of the people who made these decisions never had a business, never signed the FRONT of a paycheck, never built anything, never worried about payroll...instead pulled down a gov't paycheck & worried about the next election, not the devastation of their choices.

I run a small restaurant – we have strict health policies + recently set up a paid sick leave fund. We are a low-risk space in a community with no outbreaks. And yet, the crunch is here. If you are a small business here are some lessons learned and actions I’d recommend [thread]
We have seen an immediate loss of business and cancellation of future private bookings (April is our busiest month!) While we have not cancelled any programming or operations, I’m preparing for potential changes. #COVID19
I’ve spent the last 48 hours on the phone with our insurance company, our bank, SBA, NH Bureau of Economic Affairs and NH Works, Chamber of Commerce, Governor’s office, and elected representatives from local to federal level. From the sounds of it, many other biz are in the dark.

First, if your business was already faltering, consider SUPER strongly just shutting it down. I kept a small biz alive for 6 years longer than I should have. Biggest mistake I've made in my life. Should have killed it when crash of 2008 hit.

If you think that you want to keep your business, sit down and do the math. What do your fixed expenses (labor, rent, insurance, etc.) look like?

There is a very good chance that you are better off just going on vacation for 1 / 2 / 3 months than keeping the doors open.

Businesses are (generally) taxed on profits, and so no, a rational business wouldn’t necessarily respond to “offset the tax by reducing expenses.”
If I’m taxed 40% on profits, the effective value of an expense is 60 cents—that is, if I spend $1 as a business, I lose .60 in take-home profits.

If I’m taxed 70% on profits, the effective dollar value of an expense is 30 cents—that is, $1 in expenses loses .30 in profits.
The HIGHER the tax is on profits, the more likely I am to put money into expenses, because the expenses are (relative to my pocketbook) cheaper.
