Thank you, Reality, this was the *perfect* time for the electricity our kitchen (and ONLY in our kitchen) to fritz out.

Flipped the breaker, to no effect. Is there a step 2 here or do we have to call an electrician?
Apparently what I need to do is check the "GFCI outlets." Now if only I knew what or where those are...
Ah, thank you patient tweeters! No, none of the outlets are GFI -- there are no reset buttons, or buttons of any kind, on any of them.
I know you're on the edge of your seat, so: problem solved! Turns out these particular kitchen outlets were on the laundry room circuit, because ... who knows why. Anyway, flipped the laundry breaker, everything's back on, returning attention to various other crises.
