The funny thing about Tom is that his whole shtick is that people should defer to experts in a given field, but he feels entirely comfortable weighing in on a whole host of fields that are outside of his nominal expertise (see, e.g. judicial nominees).
Also, the funny part about the whole "War College expertise" shtick is that if you've spent any time around staff officers forced to attend a War College, you know that many roll their eyes at it. These are the career officers Tom dismissively calls "his students."
In sum, what I'm trying to say is that Tom Nichols is a buffoon who has become the thoughtless reactive that he professes to disdain.
