This is indeed a thoughtful take on #challengetrials for coronavirus vaccine development. I have a few thoughts too.
First, appreciate that Nir and @mlipsitch posted this ASAP for the world to see as a preprint. Marc, is it under review?
One big pt seems to be exactly (or approximately) how much time would be cut off vaccine approval if we take this approach. OTOH, even short time off could be impt if we have small # of people in challenge trial (most of whom will be OK) + more people dying each day we wait.

Wuhan-tier lockdowns / quarantines/cordons sanitaires / travel bans likely were inevitable; it was just a question of whether those in power came to this via feedback (watching the death tolls rise exponentially in their country) or feedforward (watching what happened in China).
remember how US Surgeon General straight up lied about how masks were useless at preventing spreading/catching SARS 2.0 while the media was mocking everyone who was worried / taking countermeasures (social distancing etc) about SARS 2.0. i knew US was a low trust society but god.

* full disclosure of all cases,
* unchecked spread,
* maximum mixing
