Its distinctive fur has earned this species monikers such as #Firefox, Firecat, or Fire-coloured Cat. Arguably, the #RedPanda is the only true #Panda, as the #GiantPanda, which is believed to be closely related, belongs to the #bear family.

Around half of the #RedPanda’s natural habitat lies in the Eastern #Himalayas – #Nepal, #Sikkim, northern #WestBengal, #Bhutan, and #ArunachalPradesh.
Its remaining home is in northern #Myanmar and a few provinces of central #China.

It lives in the #altitude range of 1500-4000 meters. A remnant population is in #Garo and #Khasi Hills in #Meghalaya (700-1400 meters).

They give birth to 1-4 cubs in the #monsoon, when #food is plentiful. #RedPanda cubs remain with the mother for a year until the next litter is about to be born and they are independent enough to venture into the #wild alone.

Highly #arboreal, their evolved wrist #bones and their long sharp #claws help #RedPandas to walk on tree branches. Additionally, their bushy #tails aid in #balance and act as protective covering for the colder months.

#RedPandas mainly feed on #bamboo #leaves, but they are also known to eat bamboo shoots and seasonal #fruits like Ward’s Whitebeam.
Did you know that the word #Panda has its roots in the #Nepali word 'Ponya', which means bamboo-eating animal?

The #RedPanda is the state animal of #Sikkim, and is very much a part of its culture. Winter sees the 'Red Panda Winter #Festival' here, where #culture, harmony, #conservation and ethnic Sikkimese food come together.

In the last 18 years, the population of #RedPanda has declined by 50%. They are listed as #Endangered by the @IUCNRedList, with an estimated #population of less than 10,000 remaining in the #wild.

#CloudedLeopards and Yellow-throated #Martens are their natural predators. But #habitatloss and #fragmentation are the major #threats to #RedPandas. They are also #poached for their fur.

#Zoos play a key role in aiding and conserving this #endangered species, with #breeding programmes that maintain viable populations. Many international NGOs such as the @RedPandaNetwork and @WWF work on #RedPanda #conservation.
