Nicaragua's parliament has passed a much criticized law on "Regulating Foreign Agents". Accordingly, people and organizations who receive money from abroad and are active in Nicaragua must register as "foreign agents" in the future.
They have to regularly report to the authorities about the use of these funds and are excluded from political activities. According to the Sandinista ruling party FSLN of the authoritarian President @DanielOrtegasa, this is intended to combat foreign interference in Nicaragua.
The socialist FSLN, which controls the parliament of the Central American country, approved the law that it had introduced itself on Thursday with 70 to 17 votes.
The head of the opposition alliance Alianza Cívica, Juan Sebastián Chamorro, condemned the law as a violation of human rights such as the constitution. It aims to make opponents of the "dictatorship" incapable of action.
He spoke of the "Putin Law" because it is similar to a regulation in Russia - since 2012, non-governmental organizations there have had to register as foreign agents if they finance themselves with money from abroad.
Last week, the European Parliament passed a resolution calling on EU heads of state and government to extend sanctions already imposed on Ortega supporters to include the president and his wife and vice-president Rosario Murillo,
should the law and two others be passed in Nicaragua. One of the other laws is aimed at cybercrime and could, among other things, impose prison sentences on critical posts on social media. The other provides life sentences for vaguely defined "hate crimes".
Both could be approved by the National Assembly in Managua in the coming days.

Foreign Minister Heiko Maas has confirmed Germany's willingness to accept corona patients from other EU countries again in view of the sharply increasing number of cases.
"If there are bottlenecks in the supply of corona patients with our neighbors, we of course offer help quickly, as our capacities allow," said the SPD politician to the editorial network Germany.
"In Europe, we can now coordinate this much better with the new early warning system than in the spring. I will rely on this solidarity when autumn is difficult." Several federal states have already agreed to accept patients from neighboring EU countries.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the outbreak of the Korean War. With the deterioration of US-China relations, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has recently deliberately raised the "Resistance to the US and Aid Korea" propaganda,
which is considered to be emphasizing that "China will not submit." China Global Times wrote earlier that if the United States "provokes and attacks" China, China "will also not hesitate to fight a bloody battle with the US military."
Some experts believe that the high-profile commemoration of "Resisting US Aggression and Aid Korea" aims to warn the United States that the two sides have fought each other in history, but China has not yielded.
