Today I was driving in the NE & I saw someone going through a garbage/recycling bin looking for something to eat
I immediately pulled over and asked them if we could help
The gentleman broke down crying and said he didn’t know what else to do. He’s never been homeless before.
He went on to say that he was new to being homeless and didn’t know anything. He used the last of his money to rent a room for a week in a motel where...well let’s just say it wasn’t the best place.
I asked him what he needed immediately and he said he needed to eat.
So we bought him some food. As we were eating our @McDonaldsCanada together he told me his story.
He came to Alberta looking for a job. Just before covid hit he had a job with a directional drilling company.
Then covid hit and it shut down. They couldn’t keep him or the other eight new hires on even with the wage help etc so he was let go.
He didn’t have enough hours to claim EI and when his money ran out things just got worse from there.
He tried to go into a shelter but he was too afraid. He couch surfed for a while but he couldn’t stay because he couldn’t pay rent.
So he wandered the streets every day for the past two weeks sleeping in places here and there and he only slept for a few hours before moving on.
He didn’t know about the free meals u til he met another homeless individual that told him about it. Then that person took one of his bags of clothes while he was sleeping.
As we were eating I asked him what else could we do to help him. He said just talking to me and treating me like a human is payment enough.
That’s when I said I run a non profit that helps Calgarians in need.
So again I asked him what he needed and he said:
I need a job.
I need a place to stay or rent or a place with roommates.
I need help getting my license and healthcare cards and birth certificate replaced cause they were stolen.
I just need help getting back on my feet again.
I said...well you’re in the right place cause we can help you do all that!
So we asked him if he would let us help him and he said “Oh my god yes”
He also said “I went from digging through a garbage bin to eating lunch with a guardian Angel”
We had a donor set him up with a week in a hotel room and we are working with other agencies to help him get copies of documents and everything else.
If anyone has any leads on jobs for him please DM.
If anyone could please donate to help you can head to our website: HarvestHillsCaresCalgary.Ca and donate there via PayPal or any Credit Cards.
Or you can donate via Etransfer:

Please if you or anyone can find it within yourself to help us to help others...we would be forever grateful.

"Hello Jen, I was hoping I would be able to contact you before I left my work for the day in regards to a rather important situation that came across my desk this afternoon. I hope you have the time to chat?"
Yesterday, we had a call. A call that made 3 of my volunteers cry.
You see, an individual in need contacted @HarvestHillsYYC and asked for help with food. We have permission to tell his story and share his request with everyone.
It started off with a phone call to a new volunteer that was on her first on call shift over the Christmas Break. "N" called and left a message in which he asked to be called back as soon as possible.
So our volunteer Melanie returned his call.
She asked N what he needed help with & he said he needed help with food/rent cause he could pay his rent & not eat for the month & maybe eat once every 3 to 4 days....or pay some of his rent and be able to eat everyday and hope he could find the money to pay the rest of his rent.
After a day of delivering shopping for and hampers with @merylyyc, I was dropping my daughter off at her dads for the week when I first got a call from a single mom that needed help.
Picture below is a truck full of hampers!
I answered the phone and explained the steps this person on the phone needed to do to apply for assistance. She told me she would head to the site right away.....and she did.
So this 🚨Emergency🚨 came in tonight. (See photo of email).
I immediately contacted her and asked her what she immediately needed. She explained that she needed to get out of the room she is sharing with her children & into a basement suite
She then said she wanted a meal or two so she could eat like a family with her kids for Christmas.
Jen here, I am currently waiting for my car 2 warm up 2 be able 2 drive 2 a home in #Martindale to pick up & drive a mom & young son to the Children’s Hospital.
She needed a ride & did not have enough money to pay for a cab.
So soon I will be heading to the Children’s Hospital 🏥 & hoping that this young mans eardrum did not burst, as his mom said that this will be his 4th or 5th ear infection just this year. Mom is alone here in #YYC as she just moved here from #GrandPrairie in January of this year.
