Our family is homeless.

There are four of us. My husband, myself, and our two teenage boys.

We sleep in our car, in Walmart parking lots or rest stops.

We are on the waiting list for the local shelter and for other housing locally.

#homeless #homelessness (1/8)
My oldest son has autism. I am permanently disabled due to an accident in 2011 that has left me unable to work. My husband suffers from crippling anxiety, depression and ptsd.

I get social security for my injury, and I worked from age 16 to my accident in 2011. (2/8)
We are still working on reapplying my son for benefits, and my husband as well. We are as connected to resources as we can be. We are connected to the schools, to dshs, and local shelters. We are still working on getting connected with possible helpful churches. (3/8)

We are calling on people to join us on the streets on #March9th to demand, yet again, meaningful action on the housing crisis. The government could begin by implementing the demands of the motion overwhelmingly supported by the Dail last October. #HomesForAll #Right2Housing
#March9th will be just one of a number of regional demonstrations over the coming months which will culminate in a national demonstration in Dublin on May 11th. #HousingCrisis #HomesForAll
#Homeless figures released by Dept for Jan show 9,987 people as officially homeless. This is a drop in the ocean compared to the true number of people impacted by #homelessness.

#HousingCrisis impacts everyone from students, Travellers, workers, families, migrants & children.

I put this thread up Friday. Few RTs because #disability ♿ and #poverty are boring to people who aren't living it.

That's a real problem in America.

Yet my mentions were full of people facing the same struggle --the fear, frustration and isolation.

♿↘️
The failure to prioritize sick & #disabled people in America is an actual catastrophe for millions. We already know nearly all of America's #homeless suffer from some #disability.

Also, 81M disabled & 131M chronically ill Americans struggle financially due to medical costs.
When the #GOPTaxScam eviscerated the #ACA mandate, it jacked up the premiums for every sick person in America. Mine went from $239 a month for my HMO to $1,978.10.

The CBO said it would happen and it did. Millions have dropped their health insurance because of these price hikes.

This has been the most frustrating day.
I have been working since I was 14.
I am now trying to apply for #disability--#SSDI.
It's a ridiculously arduous process meant to trip people up and keep desperate/sick/#disabled people from accessing help.

We must do better.
#CripTheVote
Since the #GOPTaxScam, my health insurance premium costs $1,978.10 PER MONTH for an HMO.
The cost of being sick in America.

That is just my premium--not the co-pays, not the cost of oxygen, hospital bed, Rxs.

I'm already bankrupt and soon The Wife will be as well.
#CripTheVote
My health insurance premium costs $24k a year.
That's more than I make as a writer.
How is this acceptable, America?
If I didn't have a partner, I would be on the street, paralyzed and sick.
Is this what we want for our most vulnerable people?

My family is currently homeless. We live in our car, usually at Walmart parking lots or rest stops. We are a family of four. I'm disabled, my husband suffers from mental illness, and we have two teenage boys, as well. My oldest is autistic. (thread)
Because of the autism and because we all suffer from anxiety, we avoid the overnight shelter here, which is usually full of sick children, loud noise, and awful smells. I have tried this option many times, and my oldest just hides in the bathroom when we are there.
The majority of the programs here for the homeless are for adults without children. There is literally one family shelter. We are on a list to get into the main shelter, but like I said, we have problems with the overnight shelter there, too.

Here’s a thread that nobody asked for comparing today’s urgent global problems to dim sum.
1/14 Nuclear Weapons v. Xiao Long Bao: Treat with respect or face intense explosion, third degree burns and worse. Experts disagree on how to handle in a never-ending debate. Also, it’s a challenging dish to make. #globalzero #nuclearweapons
2/14 Climate Crisis v. Chicken Feet: Look, you can’t soft sell this. It’s not chicken “change” for chrissakes. It’s the most intimidating item on the table, and there’s no disguising it for what it is. Deniers are vocal. #climatechange #globalwarming

Helping the #Homeless, rather than harming them.

We have a problem here at our building.

A homeless people problem.

Likely a similar problem to what many, many buildings have, across the developed world. No, the problem isn't
that there are homeless people who stay in the lobby because they have nowhere else to go.

The problem, is that people who live inside the building, in actual homes, with heat food and all sorts of other necessities of life, keep calling the cops on those not as fortunate,
simply for taking shelter.

There are many reasons that are claimed this is done, but simple fact, is that it is wrong, regardless of the 'why' that is claimed.

Notice what I said there. I didn't say it was wrong to call the cops on someone who is threatening someone, or

BREAKING: Strafford County will open its emergency overnight warming shelter in Dover at 4 p.m. Saturday due to the hazardous wind chill. The opening comes after pressure from community members and #homeless/social service agencies. @FostersDailyDem @StraffordCAP @NHCEH (THREAD)
Strafford County Commissioner George Maglaras, via text:

“Opening the warming shelter today at 4 o’clock through Monday morning at nine given the nature of the wind chill factor out is the driving factor

And after hearing from many of the social service agencies in the county”
Big news for those who have been looking for or calling for assistance. The next two tweets contain two previous stories on the County Farm Road almshouse shelter for background on what’s going on/how it will be structured.

THREAD The mass homelessness we're seeing in Toronto & Canada is without question a disaster. It's a disaster on the same scale - or bigger - then most of the biggest natural disasters in Canadian history. So what would happen if we treated it as such? bit.ly/2Qts7dW 1/
1st let's look at the scale of #homelessness. It happens to at least 235,000 Canadians per year, 35,000 every night and costs $7 BILLION per year. It kills an unknown number of people & reduces life expectancy for thousands. homelessmemorials.com/memorial/ 2/
The scale of #homelessness is the same our our worst natural disasaters. bit.ly/2S1ESJJ We have to respond accordingly. Municipal disaster response processes provide a model for ending #homelessness. What does that look like & how could it apply? 3/

The @FT seasonal appeal is for "Habitat for Humanity"; you can watch the video here: ft.com/video/32292bcb… - please donate, and share, if you feel moved to do so.
Another suggestion: think hard at this time of year about a charity worth giving your consistent support to; not the biggest brand name or the one which sends people knocking at your door. (givewell.org has suggestions). Set up a regular donation. Please?

It's #ElectionEve and I want to tell you why I #vote.
My parents were Socialists.
They grew up dirt poor.
They believed in creating change in their lifetimes.
They raised us to believe the same.
When we were small, they were Civil Rights workers.
My dad was a Freedom Rider.
1/
Our early childhood was framed within & by the #CRM.
My mother wasn't well, but she did everything she knew how, to ensure that black Americans had the right to vote, a right she cherished because her mother had been a baby #suffragist and had fought for that right for women.
2/
The fallout for my parents was minor compared to their black friends, but it was violent and hate-strewn and they worried about their children being hurt.

And we were hurt. I got beaten up a lot because then as now I refused silence. I got in a lot of fist fights.

And why is MSM so quiet about it???

this man in the video nailed it on the head when he says the city will not give these motorhomes tickets because they don't want a paper trail showing how many homeless are in Los Angeles and being supported
Here are only some answers. People are renting many of these RV's

Here's the full study from @seattletimes article.

I have done several series on #homeless people and women and teens are at high risk for sexual assault due to their vulnerability and being "invisible" in society. There are few access points to report. scribd.com/document/38694…
There are some disturbing remarks in the threads on @seattletimes article. These imply that because the study was small, it's irrelevant. But that is quite obviously false. Every raped woman is relevant. And the coercion of Native women by non-Native men has historical context.
Native women are the least addressed in the context of the #MeToo movement. Homeless women are not mentioned at all. This @seattletimes article highlights that fact. For that reason and more it should be read and shared and discussed--but in no way dismissed.

If you come across any homeless people in your area then please please do what you can to help. Here is a list of what you can do to help
1) Contact StreetLink if you see anyone sleeping rough in England and Wales. They will help the homeless get in contact with their local services. You can send StreetLink an alert via its website, app, or by calling 0300 500 0914.
When you do send an alert, you should include three things:

A specific location
Details of the time
Information that will help them to find the homeless person
