The World Bank has expressed its willingness to assist in the implementation of the historic Mazar-i-Sharif-Kabul-Peshawar railway project, according to the Uzbek government.
Following talks with a World Bank delegation led by Anna Bjerde, the banks vice president for Europe and Central Asia, the Uzbek Ministry of Investment and Foreign Trade said that other international financial institutions would be invited to participate in the strategic project.
Following trilateral talks in Tashkent earlier this year, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, and Afghanistan signed a roadmap for the construction of a rail connection.
According to Uzbek officials, the 600-kilometer railway would link Pakistani seaports to Central Asian and Eurasian railway networks, significantly rising cargo flows and reviving the region's historical position as a bridge between Europe and Asia.
