A gist of what Dr #Fauci said last night in a Zoom chat abt #COVID19 & #science organised by @niemanfdn
A thread:
Asymptomatic transmission has been most worrying when it comes to the #pandemic. Interested to understand long #Covid going forward, the profound impact it can have.
#Science is a self corrected process but had been interpreted as flip-flopping. If you don't evolve with data you're doing something wrong.
People should not confuse #socialmedia for media which has no quality control. Classic #journalism hasn't changed. We are looking at a battle between distorters and truth-tellers.
Global #pandemic requires a global response. It's also in the interest of rich countries to help the developing ones get vaccinated and soon. Developing countries can't suffer because they don't have access.
The #mRNA#vaccine dominantly used in US induces a powerful immense response against many variants including the #Delta variant.
In the absence of #vaccines, temporary #lockdowns help contain transmission. Masking, social distancing, avoiding congregations. The #economy won't run if a #virus is ravaging your #country.
If you're #vaccinated and get the virus and don't get symptoms then it's probably a lower load of virus and you're less likely to transmit it.
I don't see durability of a vaccine to be infinite. We might need boosters. #Measles protection is lifetime in most people. Among general population when it comes to #Covid-19, when and who may need the booster? We don't know yet, we are trying to find out.
We can't prove or disprove the #lableak. Nothing in that virus says it was manufactured in a lab.
We have decades of interactns with #Chinese#scientists. "I'm not talking abt Chinese govt, I'm talking of Chinese scientists. If we'd said we won't study the animal-human interface, we'd have relinquished responsibility." Can't account for evrything that happens in Chinese labs
Thread ends.
*self-correcting process
*socialmedia has no quality control unlike media
*powerful immune response
