Thank you for your patience! We are live! #ImmunoEquity is starting now! A flyer of the gender equity panel with the headshots and af
#ImmunoEquity we are recentering on all #MarginalizedGeneders and how the #Intersection of #Gender and #Race affect these demographics. 1/
#ImmunoEquity we have seen some increases in white and Asian women, but not in #Hispanic, #Black, or #Native women over the last 15 years and how intersectionality plays in this -Dr. @LabFairfax 2/
#ImmunoEquity Even in Sub-Saharan Africa, women are at lower leadership levels than more senior positions. -Monkgomotsi 3/
#ImmunoEquity what has the progress on gender equity in the last few years or decades? We have been working on challenging #STEM and having more discussions around this which is important -@kirty_michelle 4/
#ImmunoEquity there has been a recent occurrence of trying to include #LGBTQ2S+ individuals in #STEM but there are still palpable movements to allow people to be their authentic selves even though we aren't where we need to be. -Dr. Fairfax 5/
#ImmunoEquity there is still a leaky pipeline to keeping women in #STEM across the globe -Monkgomotsi 6/
#ImmunoEquity do we have to consider the different sectors and what pressures they place on women? We must align our priorities so women can thrive no matter what sector they decide to pursue and change what we define as successful so people aren't excluded -Dr. Fairfax 7/
#ImmunoEquity even when we want to be our authentic selves, there are stereotypes that will continue to manifest themselves. We much put our needs first because we will get pushback from breaking the cycle. - Kristin 8/
#ImmunoEquity because of stereotypes around Black women, it's hard for others to be receptive to our vulnerability because people don't think we can be that way. We must systemically push back against that so Black women can be themselves fully -Dr. @LabFairfax 9/
#ImmunoEquity Black women tend to limit themselves because of patriarchal societies. Even with passion to pursue #STEM, there is a need for mentorship to overcome internal barriers placed from cultures. -Monkgomotsi 10/
#ImmunoEquity We require systemic change from institutions for #RadicalChange because we can't keep patching an unhealthy pipeline forcing #BlackWomen to just survive when we want to thrive. -Dr. Fairfax 11/
#ImmunoEquity it is common for successful #BlackPeople to die early because they have been forced to survive and not thrive. The undo stress causes early death. -Dr. Fairfax 12/
#ImmunoEquity more women in #STEM isn't going to solve the problem. We need changes in the system. -Kristin 13/
#ImmunoEquity how do we balance #DEI work and career development to ensure we advance our work but integrate systemic change? We have to value the #DEI work as much as a PI getting an #R01. Realigning values for everyone to thrive. Value people as much as money. -Dr. Fairfax 14/
#ImmunoEquity we must reimagine the systems that we are in. As scientists, we do it every day. So now we need to implement it. -Dr. @madina_immuno 15/
#ImmunoEquity What power do we have as individuals of marginalized identities? We have the power to raise awareness or pave the way for future scientists as people that are on the ground and in the system - Monkgomotsi 16/
#ImmunoEquity we can only get to higher levels of representation by mentoring the next generation of scientists and exposing them to diversity. -Monkgomotsi 17/
#ImmunoEquity mental health is important for students and figuring out what barriers there are and how to navigate around them. Also reclaiming power as a student when it comes to doing your research and publishing. -Kristin 18/
#ImmunoEquity #Community is also very important for anyone in #STEM but particularly #marginalized groups is impactful for interpersonal resilience. -Kristin 19/
#ImmunoEquity #BlackWomen require a community even if it's one other person or more. We must mainstream #MentalHealth for everyone so even when we reach parity, the ecosystem is still healthy for everyone. -Dr. Fairfax 20/
#ImmunoEquity we can't get out of #patriarchy until men are also trained and exposed to #diversity and #MentalHealth initiatives. 21/
#ImmunoEquity what is missing from current conversations/initiatives in #GenderEquity? There are advancements but we must change the systems in place or we aren't doing anything at all. -Monkgomotsi 22/
#ImmunoEquity we have made room to break down white from Black women, but we also have to further break down marginalized races and other intersections like body shape, disability status, socioeconomic... It's a nuanced conversation and we need to pick it apart. -Kirstin 23/
#ImmunoEquity Dr. Fairfax has hope because there is more openness to diversity that is #BlackSpeech in different areas of #STEM, however, there is a lot of resistance to put in support to enable all women to succeed: healthcare, paid family leave, etc 24/
#ImmunoEquity We are seeing #BlackWomen turn down positions because they are being #tokenized and there is blowback to institutions and they can't get away with that. -Dr. Fairfax 25/
#ImmunoEquity Not everyone can mentor everyone! We have to normalize this idea. -Dr. Fairfax 26/
