Welcome to the weekend.
Day 157 of #Russia's illegal full-scale war on #Ukraine, but it's 8 and a half years since the start of the invasion when Putin's troops appeared on #Crimea and then later east 🇺🇦
Ukrainians fight on for freedom.
Here's the daily🧵
All the news in 1 place
The condemnation of both the castration/murder videos & bombing of #Ukraine POWs in Russian held territory, continue at high levels.
The UN says it is "shocked by the recent videos" in a statement about the torture and shooting in the head of a prisoner
#Russia says the POWs were killed by #HIMARS missile strikes.
The respected @TheStudyofWar points out #Russia "published videos of the detention centre, which showed fire damage but not the sort of damage that a HIMARS strike would likely have caused."
Numerous strikes on #Ukraine cities again overnight.
At least one person has died in #Mykolaiv /#Nikolaev and six were injured after missiles hit a high rise building. It follows yesterday's strike on people queuing at a bus stop when 5 died.
More from #Mykolaiv...
Children had a lucky escape when a Russian missile landed right next to a playground slide this morning.
Chair of German Parliament's Defence Committee slams Chancellor Scholz for delaying weapons for #Ukraine.
Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann reportedly said "The bottleneck that slows down Germany's military aid is, for some reason, the office of the chancellor."
#Russia has again accused #Ukraine of shelling inside its border (why shouldn't it?)
With zero photos or video leaders in #Bryansk region claim artillery hit the village of Lomakovka. An electrical substation and several households were supposedly damaged.
In #Kherson large scale redeployment of troops continues according to sources; to prepare for the #Ukraine push
Meanwhile Telegram chanel kherson_typical publishes these photos highlighting growing discontent in the city, lack of goods and people trading with cigarettes or booze
#Russia's launched an investigation after complaints a children's wallpaper featuring maps shows #Crimea as part of #Ukraine.
France owned @leroymerlinfr could be fined and blocked from selling the "offensive" product, which also failed to show other territory seized by Russia.
#Russia claims it has destroyed a military train in #Donetsk killing over 140 elite #Ukraine soldiers.
Moscow says a direct hit in #Pokrovsk (RU: #Krasnoarmeysk) wiped out an elite battalion of the 1st separate brigade of the President of Ukraine.
The "salt city" in #Donetsk oblast is being pounded relentlessly following the usual Russian modus operandi - destroy everything, everyone, then take over.
#Russia's Defence Ministry also saying today that they killed 30 of #Ukraine's Kraken Battalion in #Kharkiv.
Moscow reports Iskander missiles hit the deployment point in a local meat processing plant. They sau 10 units of military equipment were also destroyed.
#Ukraine's southern command has belatedly confirmed that the railway bridge over the Dnipro river in #Kherson has also been put out of action.
It's close to the #Antonivskyi road bridge which was hit at the same time, as well as another road bridge over the Inhulets river.
Excellent investigation and report here showing how #Russia has virtually taken over sovereign #Sudan, plundering the country so it can kill in #Ukraine and turn off gas to the west.
If we do not help, and defend, Africa it happens again + again
A protest in central #Kyiv this lunchtime urged world leaders to recognise #Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism.
Among those on Sofiia Square were many relatives of "Azovstal" fighters; they know many may have been killed in the massacre at #Olenivka prison in #Donetsk
The former Head of the CIA reckons #Ukraine will be able to reclaim all territory lost since February.
David Petraeus told Bild "It seems increasingly likely" noting "in May Russia fired 20,000 artillery shells per day, now it's only about 5,000"
#Ukraine's Air Force reports a successful day in the east.
Impossible to verify the claims, but they say their missile and bombing raids took out two Russian field ammunition depots, two company strongholds, up to twenty units of armored combat vehicles and "dozens of orcs"
A leading #Ukraine media channel reports two whole companies of elite Russian forces refused to fight.
Channel 24's own intelligence sources claim the enemy's Kantemyriv tank division wouldn't agree the contracts, even under threats.
After a crucial 48 hours delay, #Russia now "invites" UN and Red Cross members to the #Olenivka jail, site of the massacre of 50 Ukrainian Prisoners of War.
Of course it will be at least another 1-2 days before anyone will get there. Plenty of time to "prepare" the site.
According to the occupiers, today four people died in the #Donetsk region under Russian control.
11 more civilians were injured as around 300 #Ukraine rockets landed on the occupied territory.
This from earlier this evening in west Donetsk

The last day of July is Day 158 of #Russia's war of choice.
Each day I document the major news and events, along with analysis. I've been working in #Ukraine for 20 years and studying the relationship with its neighbour as Putin became more and more aggressive.
Enjoy the thread
Of course not only Putin and #Russia involved in the illegal aggression.
#Belarus is playing an active part too. I am disappointed that Britain's @DefenceHQ does not acknowledge that Lukashenka is the ILLEGITIMATE president. @Tsihanouskaya won the 2020 elections
Today the number of Russian Armoured Personnel Carriers destroyed by #Ukraine in this war so far ticked over 4,000.
Also a lot of artillery systems are being taken out in recent days. Plus another 160 soldiers eliminated.
Welcome to the daily thread on #Russia's war for Friday.
It's Day 156 of the full invasion of #Ukraine.
All the most important news in real time, plus my analysis.
I try to answer all questions @ me, DMs open for tip-offs. If you have an urge to donate, see my profile. Thanks!
1/2 Every day #Ukraine publishes statistics for the losses suffered by #Russia. The Kremlin refuses to update any figures, presumably fearing kickback from the public as the "10 day war" drags on and on.
Below is today's updated estimate from🇺🇦 but there's another problem for🇷🇺
2/2
Even official data in #Russia for Jan-May 2022 show the population falling at record levels
430,000 fewer people were in Russia - the decline much worse than during Covid. Most war deaths won't even be in these figures - this is young people fleeing
It's causing problems for everyone around the world, all because of one man. But giving in, or ceding ground is like giving painkillers to someone with a curable disease. Moderate relief now but much worse pain later.
Here's the🧵
Britain's MOD is in positive mood today and so will all #Ukraine followers reading this.
The first news from #Kherson is not overly good for #Ukraine. Although the Antonivskyi bridge was hit, the structure still stands and is still passable.
#Russia's state new agency TASS says there is "no damage" which is highly unlikely.
#Odesa, #Kharkiv & #Mykolaiv among 🇺🇦 cities hit again overnight but not always with missiles designed for the job. The Kremlin orders more weapons out of "deep storage" and prepares for a #Ukraine counter attack in the south
Here's the🧵
1/2 First to those weapons on the move in #Russia.
It started with this video capturing what's believed to be
2S7 Pion heavy artillery being transported west.
They are Soviet machines, at the time state of the art high powered guns with a range of almost 50km,
2/2 Some excellent sleuthing on the internet found the source - a diminishing supply of stock.
Google Earth images show there were 170 of the Pions stored at this location in #Russia early April, down to 135 at the start of June; last week only 110 remaining.
