Thread: 3 October 2022: Day 222 of #Russia's invasion of #Ukraine
Latest @DefenceHQ update: #Putin publicly said on Sept. 29 that there were issues with the mobilisation he ordered on Sept. 21. This "unusually rapid acknowledged of problems highlights the dysfunction": the scope is unclear to lower officials and training perfunctory at best. Image
#Australia's equipment at work in the newly liberated zones in #Ukraine
Tamila Tasheva, the top representative of #Ukraine's President Zelensky for #Crimea, says the recapture of the Peninsula from #Russia "feels inevitable. It may not happen tomorrow, but I think it will be much quicker than I thought a year ago." theguardian.com/world/2022/oct…
The Roman Catholic Pope with something worse than a grotesque moral equivalence, here: he appears to be saying that #Ukraine's President Zelensky not being "open to serious proposals for peace" is why the Ukrainian population is still under attack by #Russia. Image
Some positive signals from #Germany, with MPs, including the Greens, encouraging the supply of Leopard 2 battle tanks to #Ukraine after the liberation of Lyman.
Unfortunate that in #Brazil, it matters not for #Ukraine whether Lula or Bolsonaro prevails: both are equally friendly to #Russia.
#Russia's state television just ignored Lyman last night
#Russia's air, missile, and artillery power all significantly reduced, supply being among the reasons, and every sign that #Ukraine's push into Luhansk is going to end the way Kharkiv did, given the Russian Army's military deficiencies and low morale.
This is an excellent thread about interpreting those polls of #Russian "public opinion". Everyone knows the "garbage in, garbage out" problem with polls, but in effect in Russia *taking the poll* is the garbage, or at the very least reading.
#pt: As @YudinGreg notes, Russians don't believe when they are asked to vote or talk to pollsters that they are speaking about a prospective decision; they believe they are being asked to ratify a decision already taken, and there is no upside to disagreeing with the state.
#pt: A particularly important from @YudinGreg to underline: #Russians interpret pollsters as state agents, and for Russians the state is both the greatest source of danger and the entity to solicit for favours - and in either case (fear or to butter them up) it means agreeing.
#pt: The final point from @YudinGreg to underline is that because #Russians interpret polls as the state surveilling them about a decision already taken, assuming that what is said in response reflects the formation of *any opinion at all* is highly dubious in many cases.
Absolutely no reason for #Australia to let the #Russian ambassador Alexey Pavlovsky remain in place when he is using his position for subversive activities.
Some emotions and gestures and now even phrases - "fuck yeah", would appear to be one them - cross all cultural boundaries when it comes to fighting the Russians.
Vladimir Solovyov trying to change "line" without admitting that's what he's up to.
Igor Girkin ("Strelkov") does not see Oskil and Svatove as having long left in Russian hands.
#Russia's hope that the winter would buy some breathing room is almost certain to be disappointed. #Ukraine is, or is being, equipped to fight at these temperatures; the Russians decisively are not, and with all the problems of command and morale on top...
#pt: @Ayei_Eloheichem pointed out a few weeks ago #Russia lost soldiers to frostbite because they were not equipped with winter gear *at the beginning of the invasion*, which they picked the timing of. Add in the mauling of the last six months ... not good
#Ukraine's First Lady Olena Zelenska is interviewed by @60Minutes. Speaks about many things, says that all talk of trading land for "peace" is impossible: that land contains Ukrainian people, who will not be left under #Russia's terror regime.
#Lithuania has PNG'd #Russia's charge d'affaires Sergey Ryabokon for engaging in activity "incompatible with his diplomatic status". tass.com/world/1517095
#Brazil's ruler Jair Bolsonaro has come out in support of #Ukraine, after long being de facto pro-#Russia.
One of the Mohajer-6 drones that #Iran sent to #Russia has been captured by #Ukraine.
#Ukraine's military intelligence chief Kyrylo Budanov says in an interview he is a Christian, of a fairly serious kind it would seem.
After the week #Chechnya's warlord-president Ramzan Kadyrov has had, messaging-wise, might be worth someone in Moscow having a word.
One of #Ukraine's diplomats absolutely lost his shit with Elon Musk, and certainly speaks for a nation on this one. The most cynical business sense would tell Elon not to do this after all the goodwill Starlink had built up, but he's a crazy person.
#Russia's Army continues its pointless attacks on civilians in the Kharkiv area, this one in Kupyansk.
That is a very extreme ratio. #NAFO and every Fella connected or adjacent to the movement is in the replies, as well as #Ukraine's officials and even the Rada itself. Another fine day out on social media for Elon Musk. Image
And now President Zelensky himself has weighed in against Elon Musk.

Rare that somebody gets to be the main character on here by crossing a line that publicly infuriates a head of state.
This really is a thing that happened and there is a video of it. What a world.
The defenders of Elon Musk over his Ukraine nonsense are mostly from the usual cloud of overlapping anti-anti-Russia types, edgelord anti-Current Thingers, various shades of Trumpist, libertarians, and anti-Americans. There is then a specifically pro-Elon set, which is just weird
Reports Dudchany in the Kherson Oblast has been retaken by #Ukraine
Jewish Ukrainians who fought against the Russian "denazification" operation speak
Shitpost from adviser to #Ukraine's President Zelensky: "We work quickly"
An endorsement of Elon Musk from #Russia's government
#pt: Medvedev seems to have been drunk-posting a bit recently, usually on Telegram and in Russian. Have a slight suspicion this has come to Twitter and in English ...
None of the statements or sources are above RUMINT, but for what it's worth @thetimes reports some concern among analysts and within #NATO governments that #Russia is preparing to launch a nuclear demonstration, possibly in the Black Sea. thetimes.co.uk/article/putin-…
Nice piece by @jkirchick for @TheAtlantic on the motley crew of far-Left dead-enders, Right-wing isolationists, and "realists" who have gathered under the label "anti-war" to argue that the West should facilitate #Russia's war on #Ukraine. theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/…
#Ukraine's ambassador to the #US looking to smooth things out with Elon Musk.
"Wagner" (#Russian military intelligence) channel says the fall of Dudchany in Kherson Oblast in two days to #Ukraine is worse than the most pessimistic expectations, and the idea Moscow can slow this by blowing up the dam is silly. Situation "critical".
Troops from #Russia's puppet "Luhansk People's Republic" (LPR) in east Ukraine complain that at Drobysheve on Sept. 30, the "proper" Russian troops were ordered to sneak away and leave the LPR soldiers to cover them; some Russian troops tipped them off.
At this point, Igor Girkin ("Strelkov") is, within the Russian elite, the equivalent of the worst dinner guest ever: totally hammered, just keeps shouting all the secrets everyone is keeping, and is now turning on the host to complain about the cooking
Another sign of ill-discipline in the Russian Army: a veritable brawl erupted between newly mobilised soldiers and existing contract soldiers who tried to rob the newcomers of the phones and other property and equipment.
#Ukraine advancing, and #Russia falling back, in Kherson, Kharkiv, and Donetsk.
#Ukraine blunt in its displeasure about #Iran supplying Russia with battlefield equipment. There is no effort to induce better behaviour by doing this in private or any of the other Very Clever ideas US administrations have in handling a lawless theocracy.
#Russia's policy at present is to tear up all the rules, an attack on every state that adheres to that system, and when they all react against this, start whining, "Help, help, I'm being repressed"
Two days ago, #Ukraine retook parts of her own territory that #Russia had nominally "annexed" - the exact same status as #Crimea - and Moscow did not go nuclear. This "threat" is hollow, designed to panic in the unwary. Mission accomplished to that extent.
#Iran has become the only state other than Belarus (an independent state no more) to overtly, materially assist #Russia's invasion of #Ukraine. So why has only the #US said anything about it and imposed sanctions? Where is the #EU? Or even #Israel? aijac.org.au/featured/weste…

Latest @DefenceHQ update: on Sept. 30, #Putin signed the regular annual conscription order; these recruits are not "legally" allowed to be deployed outside of #Russia, unlike those conscripted under the mobilisation order of Sept. 21. Training, equipping, etc. all a struggle. Image
This is a terribly depressing thread on @WarintheFuture's latest article, showing that there is much less than meets the eye to #Australia's support for #Ukraine.

Thread: 21 September 2022: Day 210 of #Russia's invasion of #Ukraine
The former rector of the Moscow Aviation Institute, Anatoly Gerashchenko, had a "tragic accident" on Sept. 21, he "fell" - indeed, "flew" - down several flights of stairs and "received injuries incompatible with life". moscow-post.su/news/society/b…
#Putin's delayed speech, delivered this morning, rambled through the war being necessary to stop #Ukraine having nukes, #NATO running Kiev's army and refusing peace, Novorossiya, neo-Nazis, and annexing the Donbas, to announce partial mobilisation.

Thread: 20 September 2022: Day 209 of #Russia's invasion of #Ukraine
#Russia "officially" preparing to "annex" the Donbas in eastern #Ukraine.

Should be noted, the Russians had such plans in Kherson and Kharkiv, which were derailed by the Ukrainian guerrillas before the Army liberated Kharkiv.
Imprisoned #Russian oppositionist Alexey Navalny comments on that video of Yevgeny Prigozhin recruiting prisoners for the war on #Ukraine. Sees it as a clear sign of the disintegration of the Army and notes such recruits can only make it worse.
