Countries' #Climate pledges to get to #NetZero GHG rely partly on removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, using methods such as planting trees & restoring degraded ecosystems.

New #LandGapReport revealed that these are schemes unrealistic.

National climate pledges would collectively require 1.2 billion hectares of land.

More than half of this land is already currently used for something else. This demand for land will put pressure on ecosystems, Indigenous lands, small farmers and food security.
‼️ Protecting existing #Forests and securing #IndigenousPeoples land rights are more effective than #CarbonCapture plans requiring land-use change, including reforestation. ‼️
#Indigenous leaders & civil society are calling for updates & transparency on the funding pledges at the upcoming @UNFCCC conference, #COP27.

The 50th session of the @UN_HRC ended last week.

📌 #ClimateChange has been high on the agenda — from the presentation of @SRclimatechange's mapping report to the adoption of the annual resolution on climate & #HumanRights.

This was the last session of @UNHumanRights' Chief @mbachelet.

Her work has been instrumental in advancing a human rights-based approach to #ClimateAction: She stated that climate change is one of the greatest challenges to #HumanRights of our era.
