Different year, same story as #Russia's terrorism continued right through the new year, but lucky for you my daily threads continue to document the terror and war crimes.
It's already been a terrible start to the day
So much happened in the last hour of 2022 as attacks intensify over #Kyiv. Earlier there was another massive missile attack.
If you missed anything, check out yesterday's thread right here:
But from smiles and happiness to the horrors for #Ukraine's people. But it's impossible to see this country losing. These men, women, families will never be defeated.
Amid sirens and bomb blasts shouts of "slava Ukraini" and "Putin Khuilo" can clearly be heard in #Kyiv.
Randall, thank you so much for your donation. Waking up to coffee being bought for you after 5 hours' sleep is a nice feeling! 💙💛
The number of Russians dying each day is at consistently extremely high levels*
4,670 dead this week, which I think is the highest ever weekly death toll.
Also high numbers of missiles/drones after yesterday's attacks.
*Kyiv estimates
Ah, here's the first confirmed #RussiaOnFire of 2023
This is the Taras Bulba restaurant in the centre of #Moscow.
The significance is that Taras Bulba was a cossack from #Zaporizhzhia in a story written by #Ukraine born Gogol
Ceilings have collapsed but no injuries reported yet
As well as the drones, some missile fragments were also found in #Kyiv
Part of the Svyatoshynsko-Brovarska metro line was closed earlier today after another bit of rocket was found on the track at 'Hydropark"
Two other fragments were found in other areas of the city.
Here is the result of the continued shelling of #Kherson overnight.
Authorities in #Kyiv admit "an infrastructure facility" was damaged overnight, without specifying location or extent of the damage.
However Head #Ukraine's energy company, Volodymyr Kudrytsky says it's unlikely the country will suffer blackouts in the immediate future.
It's now confirmed a man was killed in attacks on #Kherson. One other person was injured.
Meanwhile another low for #Russia, hitting the regional children's hospital. 7 shells are thought to have hit the buildings with more than 700 windows smashed.
#Russia's state news agencies say the Ukrainian hryvnia is now no longer in use in "the new regions" of the Federation.
They refer of course the the illegally occupied territories in particular #Kherson and #Zaporizhzhia where there has been strong opposition to using the ruble.
In #Russia the death's been announced of a fairly well known hip-hop artist at the age of just 30.
Andrey Raikkonen, who performed as EPP or EkhoProkurennykhPodyezdov (Echo of smoky porches) was found dead in St Petersburg. He recently cancelled a concert saying he was "unwell"
Not far away, the #Donetsk College of Industrial Automation was hit. The rocket ended lodged inside the auditorium according to local occupying officials.
In its daily briefing, #Russia claims it destroyed an hotel in central #Kyiv as part of targeting production, storage and launch sites for attack drones.
Unconfirmed reports of repeated explosions near #Henichesk, which has become the Occupiers' regional "capital" in #Kherson since losing the real capital.
Locals say it looks like #Ukraine has hit an ammunition store.
Even some pro-Russia channels and bloggers are saying the school destroyed housed newly mobilised recruits. Some have mentioned 600 being stationed there.
This is the village of #Bakinskaya in #Krasnodar.
SOTA says they can tell they are all Wagner dead because of the absence of photographs and a wreath with a yellow five-pointed star in the centre.
It's all becoming a bit predictable - another air raid alert in many areas of #Kyiv with more Iranian drones in #Ukraine airspace.
it's clear what the Iran gave Putin for Christmas.
Currently reports of explosions in #Kyiv#Mykolaiv and #Dnipro, but all sound like air defence
Todd D - you're amazing, thank you for supporting my work. I will be attacking the coffee machine regularly the next few hours as I am doing some tennis commentary too!
Link in my bio for donations💙💛
Drones from the south now heading towards #Kyiv as well as those from the north which first threatened the capital. This looks like being as big as last night in terms of numbers.
In #Dnipropetrovsk this happened a short while ago. Shot down or a hit?
#Kyiv UPDATE
Head of the City Administration Serhiy Popkp says a downed drone has caused the damage in the city.
He says the wreckage fell in the Desnyanskyi district, damaging balconies and shattering window panes in a tower block.
There is no fire, no news on victims.
Authorities in #Dnipro confirm they downed the attack drone, no landings (yet) - though it's likely the Iranian mopeds were heading over that region, towards the capital.
Here a nasty looking fragment of debris which it's claimed flew in through the window of one person's apartment where the drone was shot down in #Kyiv.
Meanwhile reports of another big explosion in #Ukraine's capital.
Day 1201 of Europe's war.
But the pre-conflict hybrid war has already been waging worldwide for years. Hacking, election interference, sabotage - we're all targeted by Russia, even if we don't all realise it yet.
Ukraine can stop the war criminal with our help.
Welcome to the🧵
Maybe Sunday will bless Ukraine with a quiet day?
Saturday was another full-on journalistic stint, catching sleep when I could.
Kharkiv shattered overnight then a daytime attack on a kids' railway.
Operation Web 2.0 & a factory hit in Russia.
It's all ⬇️
1/2 Early this morning, just before the end of the previous thread I showed the Azot chemical plant in Tula region on fire.
Not long afterwards, Ukraine hit another facility, this time in Russia-controlled 🇺🇦
This is the Hydromash factory in Melitopol' in occupied Zaporizhzhia.
Day 1194 of Putin's war, though let's remember the initial invasion came 11 years ago.
Since February 2014, not once have western sanctions or military support come close to being enough to restore justice and defeat evil.
Welcome to THE daily 🇺🇦 thread for Sunday 1 June
A new day, a new season. Summer officially started, but nothing is likely to change just yet.
Y'day's thread had some great stories, but everything paled into insignificance when justy before midnight came news of a disaster in Russia's Bryansk region:
Another night of no sleep yet - dramatic action in Moscow.
Time to start another daily thread covering everything to do with Putin's disastrous 'operation' in Ukraine.
It's 5am in Russia and Ukraine, on Day 1190 of the war.
Let's begin...
I've still NEVER missed even one day since the start of Russia's full invasion.
But yesterday's thread ended up being one of the most lively. Another near 50-post story of the day, and if you like seeing "bavovna" in Russia, go right through to the end!
Good morning on Day 1176 of the war in Europe.
In my opinion, Ukraine should have won this war in 2022/23.
Effective leadership is based on good, decisive decisions. Sadly, the allies have never been decisive, preferring dithering and half measures.
Welcome to my daily thread:
What I mean by dithering is endless internal political battles in most countries to give adequate weapons. Scholz (Taurus), Biden (everything) the most obvious examples, though Joe was hampered by Congress and is way better than now
But it's always enough to survive, not to win
