1/2 The last entry on yesterday's thread last night was about the explosions in #Kharkiv. And there were plenty of fireworks - literally!
Thankfully no-one was injured as #Russia's shells hit a fireworks factory in the northern Kyivskyi district of #Ukraine's second city.
2/2
There were many videos of the unplanned spectacular show in #Kharkiv.
Two rockets are thought to have hit the fireworks factory.
It's probably no coincidence #Russia targeted the city on the day #Germany's Foreign Minister visited and pledged more help to defeat Putin.
Last night CNN published a revealing interview with one of #Ukraine's fighters in #Soledar
He confirmed the town's still being fought over, but “everyone understands it will be abandoned. I just want to understand.. why die, if we are going to leave it anyway today or tomorrow?”
In yesterday's thread I covered the deliberate shelling of an aid distribution point in #Bakhmut.
It's now known two volunteers from #Poland were badly injured. A woman had part of her leg amputated, the man suffered a shrapnel and bullet wound.
#Spain makes shipments to Kyiv to defend the "unjust, illegal and cruel invasion" says Defence Minister Margarita Robles. However the Swiss vetoes sending Ukraine equipment they made.
Despite #Russia's boasts, #Soledar is still far from under the invaders' control. However, they continue to have a vast numerical and currently tactical advantage.
#Ukraine's soldiers fight frostbite as well as the enemy. One paratrooper will have all his toes amputated today.
I've often said I don't usually publish maps as the situation changes rapidly and info is scarce, so they're usually out of date by the time they're published
But DeepState's are the most reliable in my opinion. Noteworthy now is the bulge around #Soledar (I also marked Bakhmut)
Earlier #Russia claimed total control of #Soledar with wannabe president Prigozhin posing for a photograph with his mercenaries, supposedly in one of the town's salt mines.
At the same time they admitted fighting continues in the centre but promised to take all 🇺🇦troops prisoner
Drones are not only used for reconnaissance and killing. They can also drop little treats to the troops fighting to save the country's existence.
Here sugar is dropped to a grateful recipient in one of #Ukraine's trenches.
480 more dead Russian troops according to #Ukraine.
Equipment numbers also quite low, although the destruction of 10 tanks and 5 MLRS are both above the daily mean.
More mindless attacks on infrastructure in #Kherson overnight.
The Terrorist State was driven out of the city two months ago today. Despite still claiming Kherson is Russian, the invaders still try to kill its residents every day.
There's pretty good evidence now to suggest #Russia does control most of the town and #Ukraine's 46th Airborne paras tactically withdrew a little to avoid being surrounded, which Wagner claim they already achieved. Fighting does continue
2/
Extra #Ukraine units have arrived to strengthen across the #Bakhmut frontline, but not early, or coordinated enough to save Soledar.
So #Russia can use most of the extensive mine network, though it's only of limited use
Importantly, 🇺🇦 should still have a way out of Soledar
3/
#Russia has taken control of the village of #Pidhorodne which they hoped would assist their attempts to surround #Bakhmut and give fire control of approaches to the city.
It's doubtful there was much of a fight there as #Ukraine fell back for the bigger battles to come.
4/
#Pidhorodne though has not been anything like a staging post for #Russia's forces on the way to #Bakhmut.
At the moment the city is in no danger - #Ukraine has likely pushed back any Wagner mercenaries still further. It's possible RU moved units to Soledar.
5/
The other reason for more confidence about #Bakhmut is that an important link and supply route to Krasna Hora is under #Ukraine fire control with #Russia's mobilised troops perishing in large amounts around the smaller village.
6/
I'm already receiving Qs about #Soldar. If #Ukraine's troops are still on the outskirts can't they take it back?
In theory, yes, but very unlikely in the immediate future. They're crammed in, with attacks from 3 sides. Better to retreat, wait for more weapons, then attack.
While #Russia's sports stars are largely able to compete unhindered, another #Ukraine sportsman has died in the war.
Volleyball player and coach Vasyl Berdychevsky died defending Mariinka. Almost 200 of the country's athletes have been killed by Russia.
No sleep for the wicked! I managed to squeeze in some tennis commentary already today too. Much as I crave sleep, I'm battling on so I can join @ATipplingPhilo for a YouTube live today at 12:00 GMT, 14:00 Kyiv for a chat about all things #Ukraine
Today a state news agency in #Russia announces "Mobilised serviceman Leshkov was sentenced to 5.5 years in a strict regime colony" for his part in this protest.
Another fire now, but this one in #Ukraine and very suspicious.
In the village of Ovadne in the western #Volyn region locals report that the rector of this church yesterday refused to leave the Moscow Patriarch of the Orthodox Church.
Today the Holy Ascension Church is burning.
President Erdogan may not be "everyone's cup of tea" but he plays a canny game.
This time he allowed Turkiye's biggest city to host a rallying cry for the independence of one of #Russia's suppressed Federal states.
1/2 More squabbles and internal fighting inside #Russia's hierarchy.
I predicted a reshuffle this week and that Defence Min Shoigu was fighting for his job with strong criticism from Wagner boss Prigozhin as well as Girkin/Strelkov, mastermind of the original Donetsk invasion.
2/2 But the change has come on the battlefield with General Surovikin being demoted after just 3 months in overall command.
Surovikin was seen as Prigozhin's ally
Now Valery Gerasimov takes over.
I think Putin's suddenly wary of Prigozhin's popularity & trying to limit his power
Reliable local posters and channels in #Zaporizhzhia say #Russia has suffered another attack on its bases.
In occupied #Tokmak, two series of blasts today, particularly near the airfield.
Also reports of a "gathering of Orcs" being hit in #Nove nr the state border with Donetsk
President @ZelenskyyUa has rebuked Prigozhin for saying Wagner mercenaries captured #Soledar
#Ukraine's leader says its lies, spread to improve Russian support for a new mobilisation.
There is still fighting in Soledar: we don't know if 🇺🇦 troops are effectively trapped or not.
Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin is persistent though saying they now control ALL of #Soledar.
“Peaceful citizens were withdrawn, Ukrainian units that did not surrender were destroyed. About 500 people were killed. The whole city is littered with the corpses of #Ukraine servicemen"
1/2 #Russia has been desperately trying to weaken the western alliance. One of their made up stories is that #Poland plans to partition #Ukraine and invade the western regions.
This evening crowds in #Lviv gave Polish President @AndrzejDuda a rapturous ovation!
The Leopards are being released, with Poland confirming the tanks will be given to Ukraine, while Lithuania will provide Ukraine with extra air defence systems.
One of the clearest insights into what's really happening in #Soledar comes from @CNN
Their contact inside the town confirms his unit is still fighting "but practically on their own, without commanders"
Jamming equipment stops communications: they may be the last ones standing:
Cheers to Darren who's just bought me another coffee! First donation of the day.
Thank you sir. Your support really helps me spend the time needed to research and write up what I try to make an accurate and honest report on the situation using my sources and open Intel.
#Wagner is reporting that the body of one of the missing volunteers has been found in #Ukraine.
Prigozhin is quoted by some Russian channels as saying both are dead.
Neither statement is confirmed, but the mercenaries did release documents from Mr Parry and Mr Bagshaw
Now reported that the body allegedly found is that of Andrew Bagshaw, the British born aid worker who lives in New Zealand. He was said to be carrying the documents of both men.
By mid afternoon #Soledar was relatively quiet judging by this video I've just seen.
I cannot post it here as there are many bodies of #Ukraine soldiers, some in terrible condition.
The Wagner guy talking is amazed they refused to surrender.
Thank you Filip F for tipping me via the Ko-Fi link on my profile page here on Twitter.
Slava Ukraini
Stunning photo - how long did it take you to work out what it is?
.

.
.
It's a satellite photo via @Maxar of craters from rockets and grads landing mainly in fields near #Bakhmut.
In #Belgorod region some residents of #Severniy village were left without water and power for a while after a drone hit power lines.
So far the administration has not blamed #Ukraine.
Day 321 of #Russia's war. There's been outright war in Europe for every month of the past year after the unprovoked aggression started with bombs and the invasion of #Ukraine last February.
Follow all the news around the war, updated here in this thread throughout the day⬇️
I'll start in the now traditional fashion by giving you the link for yesterday's thread in case you missed anything in the #RussiaUkraineWar
#Kherson keeps getting shelled. Each day, each night
#Germany has eased the situation a little with the supply of 7 powerful generators. Head of Kherson Yaroslav Yanushevich posted this photo saying 3 are for water/sewage system, one for cancer care + 3 to help power in the city
The trend of slightly lower losses for #Russia continued yesterday. The data released by #Kyiv today show 430 more dead invaders and 5 more drones, but nothing especially noteworthy in the figures.
Tomorrow may be slightly higher after a number of hits reported on Russian bases.
Britain's daily update highlights a dilemma facing #Russia, while also confirming the hurried extra defensive actions taken to protect the northern "border" of occupied #Zaporizhzhia.
Shchaslyvoho Rizdva! Ukrainian for Happy Christmas.
I extend warmest wishes to those who still celebrate today in #Ukraine including those in Egypt, Eritrea and Ethiopia, and to all Russians who protest against the illegal war too.
It's Friday 6 January. It's Day 317 of the war. #Russia's illegal war on #Ukraine.
But remember it's almost the 9th anniversary of the initial invasion by #Moscow including the occupation and annexing of #Crimea against all international law.
Here's my daily news thread:
It's actually been a quiet start to the day as it was to end Thursday evening.
But I know quite a few of you (especially on non Euro time zones) like to catch up on what you missed with one easy to scroll through thread.
In three weeks it will be 6 months since the #Olenivka (RU: #Yelenivka) massacre.
I am shocked to hear @StephDujarric say the UN has given up trying to investigate. They were "not able" to visit the scene of the crime - an admission of guilt in my book
Welcome to yet another daily thread as #Ukraine moves one day nearer victory in its bid to liberate its land from #Russia's illegal invasion.
We've reached Day 316. All the news updated here throughout the day, so come back and scroll through later.
DMs open for tip-offs.💙💛
Wednesday ended in lively fashion after a quiet day. If you missed anything, the big news was from #Crimea where explosions/air defence were reported in two separate towns.
