Would you like to know about a randomized crossover trial that used a modified #ketogenic diet in #Alzheimers disease? 1/9
26 patients with clinically confirmed #Alzheimers disease were randomly assigned to a modified ketogenic diet or a usual diet supplemented with low-fat “healthy” eating guidelines and enrolled them 2/9
in a single-phase, assessor-blinded, two-period crossover trial. That means (2) 12-week treatment periods, separated by a 10-week washout period. 3/9
Primary outcomes were mean within-individual changes in assessments over 12 weeks. The assessments included a standardized cognitive exam and assessments of daily functioning and quality of life. 4/9
Secondary outcomes measured changes in cardiovascular factors and any adverse effects of the diet. 5/9
Improvement in cognitive function was not statistically significant but was definitely there. Improvements in functioning and quality of life were statistically significant. This is a breakthrough study. 6/9
Because they found that compared with the usual diet supplemented with low-fat healthy eating guidelines, patients on the ketogenic diet improved in daily function and quality of life. 7/9https://link.springer.com/article/10.1186/s13195-021-00783-x
If this #RCT had been a drug study, it would have been all over the news as a revolutionary treatment. But because there is no profit motive in #ketogenic diets, I bet nobody told you. 8/9
There are zero medications that do this for people suffering from #Alzheimers disease. Please retweet the first in the Tweet thread so someone suffering or their family members watching them suffer knows this is a way they can feel better. 9/9

In my clinical experience as a mental health counselor working with clients with bipolar disorder, I have seen a reduction in ##medication usage and stability in #mood 1/8
One of the most exciting parts of this work is seeing my clients imagine themselves as someone who is well. #Bipolar disorder can supersede someone's sense of self, making them believe their symptoms are their personality. 2/8
However, I see the opening of possibilities and improvement in function as they start to dream about doing other things. Some of my clients choose to stay on some medications, but usually, there is a lowering of the dosages and discontinuation of many. 3/8
In 2005 there was this study that, although very small, showed benefits. "Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale scores improved in all five during hyperketonemia" 2/25 n.neurology.org/content/64/4/7…
It wasn't designed to rule out a placebo effect. But the result should have resulted in excitement and further studies being done. 3/25
Someone DM'd me about POTS and long-Covid and asked if a ketogenic diet could help. So let's do a quick little thread. 🧵1/7
I wrote an article about how #Keto can help with neuro #Covid symptoms, but it is mostly focused on cognitive and mood symptoms, not POTS. Here it is if anyone is interested. 2/7 mentalhealthketo.com/2022/10/01/bes…
That said, the mechanisms can be similar. For example, #neuroinflammation (which keto is great for) impairs the function of the #Vagus nerve, which is implicated in POTS symptoms. 3/7
Are people offered a ketogenic diet from the onset of diagnosis as an alternative to medication? Do they have the right to be offered a ketogenic intervention alongside medications as an option? 3/4

Apparently, some of you consider yourself experts on cancer treatment but don't have any idea about up-and-coming data on the use of a #ketoenic diet as an adjunct for #cancer treatments. (1/9)
This thread holds some links to researchers talking about using ketogenic diets as an adjunct treatment for some cancers. People way smarter than me about the subject, and quite frankly probably better educated than you on the topic. 🤷 (2/9)
I don't want you all discouraging someone from asking their oncologist about it when it could be instrumental in saving their life or quality of life. That's not cool. Some of you need to check yourselves. #ethics (3/9)
