This is a temple to Goddess #Sita and not #LordRam, unlike the other shrines where Ram, Sita, Laxman and even Lord Hanuman are worshipped together. Here, the presiding deity is Sita Mata.
It is said that when a pregnant Mata #Sita was asked to leave #Ayodhya by #LordRam, she came to Raveri, which is located in in Ralegaon taluka. She was hungry and asked villagers for some grain. But they refused and she cursed them that no wheat would grow there #SharadJoshi
The curse is said to have held for centuries and the cultivation of wheat seems to be a more recent phenomenon after villagers prayed to the Goddess to relent and bless them or perhaps due to improved varieties of seeds etc.
The temple also has an idol of Lord #Hanuman in which he is tied up. For when Lav and Kush captured the horse used by Lord Rama in his Ashwamedh yagna, they also fought & defeated his army, including Bajrangbali himself at that site.
In the 1980s, farmer leader #SharadJoshi, who revolutionised the peasants movement through his #ShetkariSanghatana, had launched the Lakshmi Mukti abhiyan. Joshi, a former civil servant, who birthed the India vs Bharat idea felt that that while farmers should get economic liberty
their wives must also get a right in the family's landed property. Joshi, a well-read, articulate man, used the example of Ram's unjust treatment of Sita to stress how men treated their wives.
Joshi was told about the temple when he had come to Yavatmal. Soon, his Shetkari Sanghatana held the Laxmi Mukti program at Raveri. The womens wing also held its session there.
#SharadJoshi would tell people to ensure that no woman should suffer like Sita did. This moved many men to treat their wives as equal partners and grant them property rights.
Joshi contributed to the renovation of the temple. The renovated shrine was inaugurated by Joshi in 2011. The Sita Navami festival is also celebrated here.
This is an example about how local lore and religious beliefs rooted in misogyny can be turned on their heads for a larger public good. #Women#WomensDay#WomensDay2023
Today, the #MumbaiPolice have a healthy number of #women officers & constables. But do you know that they were drafted into the force due to the prohibition policy? Read this thread on #InternationalWomensDay2023
In 1937, the Bombay Province elected a Congress government under Premier B.G. Kher. In 1939, the government introduced a system of prohibition in Bombay city, with plans to cover the rest of the province later. #WomensDay#women#InternationalWomensDay2023#Maharashtra#history
A prohibition branch, or ‘X branch’ as it was known, was carved out in the Bombay police. But, despite this, the police discovered that illicit liquor was still available in #Mumbai.
The first episode with over 2.6 lakh views was on the sensational #TheBawlaMurderCase (1925) which led to the abdication of an Indian king. You can buy my book on this crime here: amzn.eu/d/7WSRPxv
#Maharashtra produced some of his staunchest supporters like Acharya Vinoba Bhave and Sitaram ‘Appasaheb’ Patwardhan, who was referred to as the ‘Konkan Gandhi,’ and his most bitter critics, like Dr #BabasahebAmbedkar and V.D. #Savarkar.
An elitist, upper-class & upper-caste dominated discourse often equates the sense of being 'Marathi' to those who have #Marathi-sounding surnames. But the sense of a #Marathiidentity transcends these boundaries. "Non-Maharashtrians" have enriched #Marathi literature & social life
Some examples:
16th-17th century bhakti- warkari saint Shaikh Muhammed of Shrigonda in Ahmednagar district, a Muslim by birth, wrote abhangs and books in #Marathi.
He says:
Because of Gopala, I have transcended norms of purity...
Shaikh Muhammed may be an avindh (an Abrahamic or one whose ears were not pierced like those of Hindus), but Govinda resides in my heart.
Sardagriha opposite the office of the Commissioner of Police, #Mumbai was #LokmanyaTilak's lodging and base in the city. It is here that he took his last breath in the wee hours of 1 August 1920. Tilak's mortal remains were kept for darshan on a chair in this balcony. #history
Thousands braved the pouring rain for his darshan. Women did their artis before the wicks were extinguished. Tilak's procession to Girgaon Chowpatty was joined by around 2 lakh people including mill workers. One of the bearers of his mortal coils was #MahatmaGandhi & the other
was Maulana Shaukat Ali. The Parsi merchants of #Mumbai ensured that necessary permissions for his cremation on the beach were secured & provided sandalwood logs. As Tilak was being cremated, a grieving Muslim youngster threw himself into to the fire & was singed.
The #RSS & Left inhabit two different ideological spheres. But Gopal Mukund (Balaji) Huddar, the 1st general secretary of the #RSS made a transformation to being a Marxist. He fought the Spanish civil war & joined the #CPI #Maharashtra#history#Nagpur#Spain#SpanishCivilWar
#BalajiHuddar was born on 17 June 1902 at Mandla (Madhya Pradesh). The family's original surname was Rauldev. They were known as 'Huddar' as they were Huddedars or noblemen of the Gond kings in Vidarbha.
Since the age of 4, he was brought up by Umabai, a rich widow from the Udhoji family, who had saved him while he was drowning. Though this was done with the consent of his birth parents, his formal adoption had not been done. This took place when he was 40! #BalajiHuddar
