Dr. @drlennardlee and colleagues found that people with #cancer had diminished vaccine antibody response, leading to breakthrough infections and hospitalizations.
Additionally, even a "mild" infection can knock people with #cancer out of treatment for 1-3 months. Other studies document how such delays increase cancer mortality.
Drs. Prasad/Haslam critiqued the 10 suggestions. There are no late-stage community-based randomized comparative effectiveness trials of N95s & HEPA filters. They also critiqued patient education.
The authors did acknowledge 9 conflicts of interest.
The authors went on to note that such patient protections could have a financial "downside."
They did not weigh in on the financial downside of hospitalizations, infection-induced treatment delays, LC, or death.

In response, we delineated the efficacy for patient education, N95s, and air cleaning.
We explained how late-stage community studies do not test efficacy, commented on the importance of avoiding reinfections, especially during #cancer treatment.
Patient education has been the bedrock of #oncology since the 1970s. Before that, people were rarely even told they had cancer (shocking article linked below).
Today, there are journals focused on patient education and many supportive meta-analyses. 9/ jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/…
NIOSH establishes the efficacy of N95s in an extremely rigorous process. "Efficacy" means that something works under ideal conditions.
Scientists obviously don't use community-based effectiveness & comparative effectiveness trials to test efficacy. 10/ jamanetwork.com/journals/jamao…
Thanks to @PPEtoheros for meeting with me, sending info, and fact-checking my questions so that we provided clear, accurate, up-to-date information on how #N95 efficacy is established and monitored.

We also provided a basic overview of #HEPA for people who are entirely unfamiliar with how air filtration can reduce the risk of airborne infections illnesses and more.
#ASHRAE has released draft guidelines for how to reduce the spread of #airborne infectious illness (like COV1D) in schools, hospitals, and other places.
It's open for public comment until May 26. This thread will give you background info and how to comment.

Joey Fox linked to the #ASHRAE indoor air cleaning draft guidance and also provided a helpful summary thread.
Public Comments at the #CDC ACIP happening live now.
Absolutely heartbreaking. The first person, near in tears, talking of the lack of precautions for newborns. Now, a mother in 3rd trimester talking about lack of eligibility for recent booster.
3rd speaker: Had to miss some work with mRNA vaccines. No issue with Novavax. Asking for greater flexibility on the frequency of vaccination and allowing anyone to get Novavax as a booster
4th speaker (lawyer): Calling for greater compassion in allowing international travelers to enter the U.S. Requests a testing requirement (or option) as opposed to vaccine requirement, which can create substantial delays.
#FitTesting is not always needed but becomes extremely valuable if the following apply:
▫️ Prolonged time period
▫️ Others are unmasked
▫️ Indoor air quality is bad or not tested personally
COVID has caused life expectancy to plummet. Ppl are getting disabled. 1.5 million Americans can't work. Vascular dysregulation is concerning. Effects are cumulative.
In an Invited Editorial in @JAMAOnc today, my colleagues & I call for health systems to develop “Comprehensive #Pandemic Support Programs” for their most vulnerable patients.
