One of the worst current takes on the climate crisis is that we know the best case scenario and it's what we have now.

Allow me to thread.
Main reason is that it's not true.

The best case scenario can't be the status quo, because there's 0% chance of things staying the same

2
Planetary circumstances won't stay the same—heat is rising, population is growing, chains-of-effect unfolding—no matter what we do.

3
Even if we completely ceased doing bad things, the changes already in motion will mean that we'll live on a very different world soon.

4
But we won't simply cease to do bad things, because of the second reason things won't stay the same: our system is profoundly unsustainable.
Remember this curve? We need massive, rapid emissions cuts to avoid dire scenarios, which means every positive scenario is disruptive.

6
One of the most cherished beliefs of American pundits: 2ºC can be had without changing much—a little solar, some EVs, a CO2 price...

BS

7.
2ºC demands industrial upheaval.

It demands not just clean energy, but a building boom, big infrastructure investments + culture change

8.
The 3rd reason things won't stay like they are now is that there is a nearly unimaginable amount of money to be made building this new world
Also extremely important is that a lot about life in 2017 sucks for a great many people. Huge numbers DO NOT WANT CONTINUITY or delay.
So, the idea that "the best case scenario is the world we have now" is likely completely wrong, and probably pretty unhelpful.
