I'm at the AMOS meeting where they'll be sharing their findings on poverty in #Ankeny. Follow for details.
"In #Ankeny, the people in need of these services aren't visible," said Tessa Fjelland of AMOS.
Almost 16% of #Ankeny residents live below 200% of the poverty level.
10.5% of the area's jobs are retail and low-wage jobs.
AMOS points out the Ankeny city council voted against raising the minimum wage.
25% of #Ankeny lives in unaffordable housing. Community Development Block Grant could help. City council did not pursue the grant.
There's a disparity between north and south side schools in #Ankeny with free and reduced lunch. South has more free and reduced.
There are no psychiatrists in Ankeny or a crisis center for mental health care.
It's a cycle. No $, you can't afford car repair. Lack of DART routes, you can't get to job. Even harder for people with mental health issues
Several elected officials here tonight too. Look out for a more detailed story on the report.
If you know anyone struggling with poverty in #Ankeny that may be willing to share their story, please find me here or at 515-284-8198.
