We all should be proactive in learning about marginalized communities of which we are not a part. I mean learning the way you did in school:
LISTENING. Doing independent reading. Asking questions at the appropriate time only when you can’t find the answer yourself. Modeling. 👇🏾
I have much to learn about the LGBTQIA community and the disabled community. Even at age 47. I stumble. I fall flat on my face. It’s tough.
I look to voices I trust on these issues and I learn from them. Meanwhile, it’s my responsibility to amplify their voices & quiet my own.
I’ll never know what they experience. Eventually I want to be able to better support them AND call out folks who are being harmful to them.
Because that, to me, is being an accomplice (totally over “ally”). Stepping in & checking harmful behavior to give the marginalized a break.
Apparently it’s human nature (unfortunately) that we listen to someone in our own non-marginalized group more than we do the marginalized.
I never want to speak FOR the marginalized community. But I CAN share what I’ve learned w/ someone else who is learning. My responsibility.
But you don’t get points for half-assed apologies when you’re only now “trying to learn” because you got called out for being insensitive.
