Today is the debate between Georgia governor candidates @staceyabrams & her opponent, who is currently GA's Secretary of State. I'm sure you've seen that there are active attempts to suppress votes. Lawsuits have been filed. But as if that wasn't enough... (#thread) #TeamAbrams
A month ago, white supremacists threaten violence at a Stacey Abrams campaign event. Where was the media outrage? It was largely non-existent. Do you even remember hearing about this? Ask yourself why not. #TeamAbrams dailykos.com/stories/2018/9…
After national outlets finally began picking up the story, local outlets started providing weak explanations. The @ajc (Atlanta's major paper) “both sided” the incident by comparing white supremacists to Democratic socialists. Because, you know, dog whistle. #TeamAbrams
Then, "out of the blue," an @AJC article from 1992 (you know, before many of y'all were born) *randomly* appears. THIS is picked up. @nytimes decided that a 20+ year old event of a Black woman protesting (WITH A PERMIT) a racist flag of the confederacy was newsworthy. #TeamAbrams
Interestingly, the @nytimes failed to cover violent white supremacists holding Kemp signs & attacking Black Women Vets, but decided to cover something on the confederacy. Unsurprisingly, it's the same journalist who wrote a trash piece normalizing white supremacists. #TeamAbrams
This is yet another example of why we need Black journalists and Black editors, nationally and locally, to help dispel the nonsense. Shame on the @nytimes for ignoring real threats towards Black candidates and their Black supporters. The sensationalism is pathetic. #TeamAbrams
Notice the timing of it all. Notice the slant. This isn't new. But it is strategic. Just days before the debate, stories drop of Abrams burning a flag, without the context of her 1) having a permit, and 2) protesting white supremacy? It's just a bit too convenient. #TeamAbrams
I am proud to support @staceyabrams who will reject white supremacy and stand up for what’s right – then and now. Stacey Abrams stood on the right side of history then, and come November 6th she’ll make history with YOUR help. #TeamAbrams
When the Secretary of State, who is running for governor, and who is also in charge of ensuring that the state's elections are fair, is concerned that citizens might actually exercise their right to vote: #TeamAbrams
Watching the @staceyabrams debate and the FIRST question is about Stacey exercising her First Amendment right of burning the Georgia flag that had a symbol of the confederacy. #TeamAbrams gpb.org/election/press…
Read @jelani9. Because you should always read Jelani Cobb.
