Alert: House votes this Thursday on Senate's FY2018 budget resolution to lay groundwork for tax cuts for the rich 1/ politico.com/story/2017/10/…
They're skipping normal part where House & Senate get together in so-called "conference committee" to iron out differences. Why? 2/
GOP in such a rush to pass budget & subsequent tax bill b/c the more delay, the more time the public (you!) has to mobilize against them.
Take, eg, this Thursday's House vote on the Senate budget. Self-styled deficit hawks turn out to be chickens: $1.5 TRILLION deficit boost—
and the so-called moderates turn out to be anti-middle-class extremists: buried in proposal are $1 trillion Medicaid & $473bn Medicare cuts.
----> Call your member of Congress at 202-224-3121 and urge rejection of budget resolution on whatever grounds s/he'd find most compelling.
Then comes the GOP's tax bill. A note on terminology:
Given that it'll RAISE taxes for millions of families, let's call it "the GOP tax bill" rather than "cut"/"reform" taxpolicycenter.org/publications/f…
...or, if you have more space, call it the GOP plan to cut taxes for the rich, raise taxes on middle class, & (soon after) cut health care
the GOP plan will immediately raise lots of people's taxes—and eventually screw over almost everyone by bankrupting the gov, leading to cuts
The GOP's plan to sell its tax bill is obvious: lie. The longer the debate rages, the more their lies crumble. So they want speed. We delay.
In the health care fight, our internal adage at @MoveOn (and allies) was that every day they didn't repeal was a day we won. Same w/taxes.
If the GOP can hurtle through a mangled legislative procedure & reach a vote on tax bill by end of year, as they plan to do, we likely lose.
If we can hold them off at each step, though, the public might have a chance to find out what's actually in this travesty—and we have a shot
That's why it's worth pushing on the budget resolution this week (and each step after). Because every day of delay makes victory more likely
The GOP knows their donors will drop them like a hot rock if they don't deliver tax cuts for their billionaires. Works for me. Let's do that
...and in the process, we just might rescue health care, pell grants, disaster preparedness, and every other damn thing the fed govt does.
