“Failing up” means you join some well-respected organization and are rubbish at your actual job. Because large orgs are slow, no one notices
for a few months. Because they’re extremely risk averse and your salary is low relative to legal action, they “manage you out” over firing.
So you’re at the company for a year or two, which is an acceptable tenure at a US tech company. You then use that resume item for promotion.
Repeat 4~5 times and you get director or VP level folks whose only professional skill is being not odious enough to immediately can.
